Say for the sake of argument that you are in a thrift shop and you see a vintage Armani suit that you absolutely love the look of. However, when you try it on, you find that the shoulders are much too wide!

Should you buy it or put it back on the rack???

In situations like these, the difference between getting a steal and wasting your money is knowing whether or not an alterations tailor can successfully complete an alteration to make a suit to fit you better.

Covering the broad question of size. How many sizes larger or smaller than your actual size can you go when tailoring a garment? The first general rule of alterations tailoring is that taking away or reducing the amount of fabric is usually doable but making a garment larger almost always is much harder. Tailored pants and jackets that were originally expensive or particularly well made especially in the case of bespoke tailoring will often have a bit more of a fabric allowance under their seams to allow for a slight change in size the wearer of the suit might have experienced overtime. Meanwhile though, ready-to-wear and less expensive garments will often have little or no excess material to work with, therefore if you find something vintage or second-hand, it's usually going to be better if itโ€™s too big on you rather than too small to start with. With that said though there are also limitations in making things smaller. A suit jacket is quite complex in terms of construction and canโ€™t simply be shrunken down multiple sizes because the proportion will be altered and the elaborate structures such as the lining padding and pockets will have to be reconstructed to the point that it would be more cost-effective to just buy a whole new jacket. The rule of thumb here is that you can go down two sizes at a maximum but the jacket or pair of trousers thatโ€™s only 1 size different from you is usually a safer bet.

Itโ€™s not going to require more surgery to cinch these sides, waist, chest, and arms but will cover this in greater depth in our next post.
