Every September, Ethiopians and Eritreas celebrate Enkutatash (New Year), marking the end of the rainy season as golden Adey Abeba flowers bloom across the highlands.
Grounded in the 3,000-year-old legend of the Queen of Sheba’s return from Jerusalem, the holiday’s name translates to “gift of jewels.”
Families mark the fresh start with new traditional clothes, coffee ceremonies and feasts of doro wat and injera, while young girls carry short lived blooms door to door, singing “Abebayehosh” in exchange for bread, coins, and blessings for the year ahead.
