RACHEL LUMSDEN

Rachel Lumsden’s large format works engage us in a highly immersive experience. Paintings that at first glance appear to be figurative also pursue the goal of abstraction, albeit one that finds meaning in its relationship with the visible world. Lumsden’s visual motifs emerge, brush mark for brush mark on the canvas, eventually converging with their true subject matter through her adept handling of material and astonishing pictorial inventiveness. The publication includes works from the last seven years and is released on the occasion of her solo exhibition at the art centre Villa Bernasconi, Geneva, Switzerland.

On Care. A Journey into the Relational Nature of Artists’ Residencies

We are proud to present this exciting publication with you! Get your copy under https://www.vfmk.org/books/on-care-a-journey-into-the-relational-nature-of-artists-residencies

The publication revolves around the polarized nature of the resident-host encounter. The space of residency generated between artist and host leads to the establishment of a temporary community whose "episodic" nature corresponds to the nature of the "postmodern" world. From the perspective of the host, the presence of the artists resembles an episodic plot, where each part – despite the uniqueness of the artistic interventions – is to some extent an open form, in fact, it can be built anew each time. Like film characters, artists assume their roles in subsequent episodes. Creating such a space in a social structure requires trust, openness and a strong sense of empathy, as well as a willingness to share one's resources.
From the outset, the editors did not aim to present an analysis of the operation of individual spheres of artist residencies, but rather to compile in dialogue a polyphonic publication that illustrates the nuances of residency work and artists' experiences, as well as the unstable constellations of artist residencies with its open-ended structure. Artist residency programs can serve as a model for dealing with the ever-changing contemporary world and societies. All this makes it possible to fulfill the dream of a world where there is a balance between acceptance and separateness. This world offers authenticity, permanent change and constant transformation.

LIGHTSOME
Keith Sonnier—this name is primarily associated with the light works of the artist, who was born in Louisiana in 1941, in the Deep South of the USA. Since the 1960s, Sonnier has continuously developed works with various light sources, which has decisively shaped the reception of his art to this day. Equally essential, however, is the unbroken and open-minded interest in a wide variety of materials and media. Sonnier has also been engaged in diverse cultures throughout his life, has traveled and created works of art using local handicrafts.
The exhibition, comprising around forty works from five decades, and the accompanying publication honor the work of the artist—who died in July 2020—in its diversity and the individual attitude that emerges in it. The English “Lightsome”, which can mean ‘bright’ as well as ‘carefree, cheerful’, refers not only to Sonnier's art, but also to his person.

Clara Oppel's works are situated at the interfaces between sound, space, installation, and sculpture. She combines sound into a symbiosis with image and space, so as to create spatial sculptures which can be walked around in. By means of audio recordings, she penetrates deep into the materiality of perception. “It's like zooming in,” she says, “but with the microphone, in order to make a microorganism audible.” Particles of original sound are extracted and modified to the point of becoming unrecognizable. She works in particular with the construction of visual elements, as well as with the movements and transformations of acoustic signals in space. The artist is concerned with the interactions between acoustic and visual perception. Both these factors determine the space in equal measure, and the give-and-take between them creates a field of dynamic tension. Immaterial sound acquires a physical appearance and, together with the sculptural elements, gives rise to synaesthetic situations. This formative interplay engenders the spatial sculptures.
Each work evinces intermodal qualities, situations which are at the same time both image and sound. The acoustic and sculptural inner life of the objects and installations takes us on journeys in multimedial space, where all situations have a reciprocal impact on each other. It is only through the amalgamation of these auditory, visual, and spatial components of equal value that the interrelated whole achieves the goal sought by the artist—the sound sculpture.

PETER GARMUSCH

We are excited to present „Studio Cairo“ by Peter Garmusch!

For his project Studio Cairo, the artist Peter Garmusch travelled for a month during 2021 to Cairo where, with his studio as a point of departure, he engaged in an artistic dialogue with the megacity on the Nile. The book tells of this rendezvous with the hidden, the numinous, and the magical. Cloaked cars, elaborately tied-up packages along the edge of a street, abundant accumulations of plastic flowers: Peter Garmusch found the inspirations for his various motifs during intensive walks through Cairo, not at the supposedly beautiful sites.
“His photographs cannot be subsumed under the term ‘classic travel photography’—these are instead everyday portraits with a voyeuristic aesthetic. The motifs seem on the one hand to have been composed through a controlled play of light and shadow, but on the other to resemble snapshots. Thus Garmusch engages in a sensual-passionate game of confusion evincing both a ready-made character and an artistic staging.” (Viktor Bucher, projektraum.at)

Since 1968, Bernhard Leitner has been creating sound spaces, meaning he considers sound to be an architectural, sculptural material. His first work in this regard was a model of Soundcube, a walkable cube with a grid of 384 loudspeakers lining its six inner walls. Moving sound through individually controlled loudspeakers distributed over an area creates spaces that are entirely auditory in nature. Initial empirical studies conducted by the artist were followed by approximately 150 sound space sculptures created between the mid-1970s and the present, each a unique calibration of the relationship between the bodily perception and sound spaces as they emerge in physical space and in time. Every one of Leitner's sculptures can be experienced as an interior (visitors can walk, sit, lie down in them), and each reveals new psycho-physiological dimensions of experience. This is the first volume to comprise all of the artist's sound space investigations, sound space sculptures, and sound space installations.

The monograph of the artist Eduard Tauss presents the series “Farbkörper” and “Offene Formen”, which were created in recent years in an organic and material-gestural formulation. “The paint has freed itself from the pictorial carrier and, by means of its own malleable substance, becomes an expression of itself and serves as the subject of its contemplation in the space.” Eduard Tauss’ series of works arise in dialogue with or investigation of the material of synthetic resin and are situated in the art-historical context of the “extension of painting.” Angela Stief offers a precise and comprehensive examination of his artistic production, while Florian Steininger focuses on Tauss’ paintings of “Offene Formen”. The essay “Embodying Colour“ casts light on the historical ramifications of the term “autonomy of colour,” and Manisha Jothady addresses the dissolution of the categorization of artistic genres. Paint which unfolds its organic-sculptural potential and manifests itself as a gesture of material or color.

The Zurich artist Andrea Muheim is known as a painter of intimate portraits and private spaces, of still lifes, and also of landscapes and cityscapes. Her fundamental and recurrent interest, however, is focused on the human body-whether as a portrait, a n**e or, as recently, in motion. She uses the medium to conduct an ongoing inventory of her immediate day-to-day surroundings and to create atmospherically charged pictorial spaces. The relationship between color, form, structure, and light is thereby repeatedly and freshly explored. A particular characteristic of her painterly practice is. the serial production of one and the same theme or subject as a concentrated investigation of issues involving visual aesthetics. Nearly 800 works have been assembled in chronological sequence into clear, concentrated tableaus;
they turn this artist's book into a veritable pictorial diary extending over the thirty years of Andrea Muheim's creative production.
