Did you know that Santa Claus might have roots in Siberian shamanism? 🍄🎄

There is an old ethnographic theory that links the modern image of Santa Claus to Siberian shamans and the sacred mushroom Amanita muscaria.

In indigenous Siberian cultures, shamans used Amanita muscaria in winter rituals.
The mushroom grows naturally under pine and fir trees — the same trees we now bring into our homes and decorate every winter.

Red and white mushrooms under green trees.
Sound familiar?

The red-and-white colors of Santa’s clothes are often linked to the colors of Amanita muscaria itself.
In some traditions, shamans wore red and white garments and entered homes through the roof opening, as deep snow blocked the doors — another curious parallel.

And the reindeer?
Reindeer were known to eat Amanita muscaria and were central animals in Siberian shamanic cultures. They were seen as spirit guides — moving between worlds.
Flying reindeer may be more symbolic than fictional.

Even the idea of gifts has a deeper layer:
visions, stories, healing, altered perception — brought back to the community after winter ceremonies.

Over time, ancient rituals transformed into myths.
Myths turned into stories.
Stories became culture.

At Bicycle Day Shop, we don’t sell fairy tales.
We work with symbols that remember their origins.

🍄✨
