First make of 2023!

Axolotls are a critically endangered species of salamander native to Mexico. The species is named after the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl who could transform himself into both a dog and an axolotl.

As amphibians, most salamanders species life in water while they are tadpoles and then move onto land as adults after undergoing metamorphosis (yes, like frogs!).
However, axolotls are unique amongst salamanders, in that they live permanently in water throughout their whole lives!
The frills on either side of their head are gills which allow axolotls to breath underwater.

Another little platypus friend just added to my Etsy store 🥰

My latest fun fact about platypuses is that they glow blue-green under ultraviolet light! Scientists have known for a long time that some arthropods, sea creatures and fungi glow under UV, but the discovery that many mammals also do this is relatively recent. It’s not yet known if ability to glow this has a purpose, but may be a form of camouflage that helps them to hide from predators. To see these amazing images for yourself just type ‘platypus UV’ into your favourite search engine!

I realised today that it’s been awhile since I posted a photo of one of these little dinosaurs! There are lots of dinos in a range of different colour combinations available in my Etsy store right now. They make a popular gift for new babies and toddlers, as all the details are embroidered (no hard parts!). And as always, free wrapping and hand written gift tags are available.

Link to purchase in my bio! 🦖🦕

Another new little addition to my Etsy store, a ringtail possum 🥰

Ringtails are pretty common in the part of Melbourne where I grew up and I always love seeing around. For some reason I don’t see them here in Bacchus Marsh though (I think it might be the lack of big old trees with hollows) and I miss them. 🥺

It’s officially Frog ID Week, which gives me the perfect excuse to share another photo of my Corroboree Frogs!

Frog ID Week is a citizen science event running from 11-20 November, and encourages people to get out to their local creek, park, wetland or even backyard and record frog calls. The data is used by the team to get a better idea of the distribution and health of frog populations around Australia. It’s super easy to participate as no skill is required.. just download the app and hit record.

In my area I commonly hear Eastern Banjo Frogs (aka pobblebonks!), Brown Tree Frogs, Common Eastern Froglets and Striped Marsh Frogs when I go for a walk, and thanks to the app I’m actually getting decent at identifying their calls!

To download the app go to FrogID] and tap the link in their bio 🐸

Happy Halloween! 🎃

This time last year I was recovering from surgery and became briefly obsessed with making this free pumpkin pattern by .design in different shades of orange/red while binging Marvel movies! 🤷‍♀️🤣
Its super cute and works up quickly, making it the perfect little project for when you’re low energy. Plus it could easily be altered to create apples, tomatoes etc.

When I first started trying to crochet Australian animals a few years ago, one of the species at the top of my list was the critically endangered Southern Corroboree frog (Pseudophryne corroboree).
Due to the threat of chytrid fungus (a fungus which attacks the skin, and has decimated global frog populations), as well as bushfires and feral animals like horses and pigs, only a small population of Southern Corroboree frogs remain in the wild.

These tiny frogs are some of the most spectacular animals you’ll ever see. Weighing only around 3 g (!) they are easily identified by the bold yellow and black stripes on their top and legs, and patches of black, yellow and white on their bellies. However, what makes this species so stunning is also the thing that makes them a challenge to crochet, so I put this plan on hold until I could find the right pattern.

All this to say, I was excited but apprehensive when a fellow PhD student who actually studies Corroborree frogs reached out and asked if could make her a couple. Luckily, after a bit of research I found this super cute ‘rainbow frog’ pattern by and knew I was finally on the right track. I love how they turned out so much I’m going to have to make one for myself.

Thanks to for this really fun commission and allowing me to share one of her photos. For more videos and photos of these gorgeous frogs go check our her account!

Gang’s all here!

Today is Threatened Species Day is Australia, which held every year to raise awareness for animals and plants. It is held on the 7 September to mark the death of the last thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) which died on this day in 1936.

Due to factors including high rates of land clearing and the introduction of cats and foxes, Australia has one of highest extinction rates in the world, especially for mammals… Sadly all the mammals in this photo are considered threatened: Western Ringtail Possum (fortunately the Common Ringtail is doing ok 😊) Numbat, Platypus and Quokka.

Happy National Wattle Day!

Australia has over 1000 species of wattle, including the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) which is our floral emblem. Wattle Day is celebrated on the 1st September every year, marking the first day of spring and the start of Biodiversity Month. After an unusually cold, wet winter here I’m definitely looking forward to the warmer weather and longer days! 🌻
