I told myself I wasn't going to talk about it. But the irony just makes it too good.
Today, Australians with migrant backgrounds are out and about:
- Using Korean-made phones
- Wearing Vietnamese-made shoes
- In Bangladeshi jeans
- Wearing a Vietnamese made shirts
- Waving Chinese-made flags
All this in a country colonised under *terra nullius*—a legal fiction that ignored the First Nations peoples who were already living here. Australia was claimed by Britain largely to serve as a dumping ground for convicts. Who might I add were largely people with disabilities and disadvantages.
Migration has shaped this country in countless ways:
- Dutch and German settlers helped build agriculture and the wine industry
- Chinese migrants arrived during the Gold Rush
- Italians and Greeks contributed to construction, farming, small businesses
- Pacific Islanders were brought in as sugar cutters and labourers
And that’s just a handful of the communities who’ve helped build modern Australia.
Meanwhile, we’re facing:
- A declining, ageing population
- Workforce shortages
- Struggling essential services
Yet most visas are only valid for two years. To become a permanent resident, you need to stay for five years on consecutive visas. During that time, you must:
- Meet strict character and language requirements
- Pass the citizenship test
- Avoid spending more than 12 months outside Australia in the first four years, or more than 90 days in the fifth
- Maintain a clean criminal record—any slip-up can derail your application
So even if Labor were “buying votes,” those votes wouldn’t count for another two elections.
If you want to understand Australia’s migration story better, read *Australia’s Second Chance: What Our History Tells Us About Our Future*. Or check out the 2015 docuseries *Making Australia Great Again*.
History matters. Context matters. And today’s a good day to remember who built this country—and who continues to keep it running.
So if you are out and about marching today I'd seriously love to know the true reasons as to why you are doing it.
