Skating on Sacred Land exists because representation matters, sovereignty matters, truth matters.
Our bodies move, train, fall and rise on Country that holds memory, grief, survival and resistance.

That truth doesn’t pause for a public holiday.

January 26 is heavy.
I usually step back from social media to care for myself and spend time with family. This year though, I took a peek... And I felt genuinely humbled by the outward support shown by leagues across the roller derby community.

The statements, the learning, the willingness to sit with discomfort instead of looking away - it matters more than you might realise.

Solidarity isn’t performative when it’s consistent. Visibility isn’t empty when it’s backed by action.

To everyone showing up, speaking up, uplifting First Nations voices and holding space: keep it up. Your support matters!

And to all mob today, and every day: keep walking strong, speaking your truth and shining your light. Your stories and your voices matter!

Wow! Thank you so much Margaret River Roller Derby. Seeing everything come together like this is incredibly special. I’m honestly lost for words, thank you for these beautiful jerseys.

This artwork holds an extra special meaning for me, because the red-tailed black cockatoo is my eldest son’s birth totem, called Balam in Wakka Wakka language. Seeing it honoured in this way makes this artwork even more powerful and close to my heart ❤️

Thank you for being the most deadly person to communicate and collaborate with!So grateful for the trust and the love poured into this. What an absolute honour to be part of this journey with such an amazing league 🥰

Skating on Sacred Land is my way of honouring my people, our deep connection to Country and my love of roller derby. It carries the strength of our Ancestors - their stories, resilience and wisdom that still guide us today.

This design celebrates the derby community, a diverse group united by passion and movement. The track and Aboriginal symbols tell the story of our different journeys, and how together we build strength, resistance and belonging.

We all skate on sacred land. But roller derby still holds many barriers for First Nations people - access isn’t equal, and the fight for recognition and respect continues.

May this design remind us to honour Country and the First Peoples, to hold respect in our hearts and to never take our presence here for granted.

If you’re part of this community, your role matters. Show up with intention. Listen deeply. Amplify Blak voices. Stand beside us, not just in celebration, but in the ongoing fight for justice and change.
