👜 LEATHER MATTERS

Not all leather is the same.

Different animal hides, tanning methods and finishing techniques create leathers with very different characteristics. Some are soft and supple, some are firm and structured, some develop character with age, and some are designed to resist scratches and wear.

At Insomnia Leather, we choose the leather to suit the purpose of the item being made.

VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER

Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest methods of tanning leather, using natural tannins derived from plants and tree bark.

Vegetable tanned leather starts firm and develops a rich patina over time. It can be stamped, carved, moulded and dyed, making it a favourite for traditional leathercraft.

Common uses:
• Hand-tooled belts
• Carved wallets
• Journal covers
• Structured bags
• Custom engraved pieces

PULL-UP LEATHER

Pull-up leather contains oils and waxes that move within the leather when it bends or stretches.

This creates lighter and darker areas, giving the leather a beautiful lived-in character. Every scratch, bend and crease becomes part of its story.

Common uses:
• Handbags
• Satchels
• Everyday carry items
• Rustic-style accessories

SAFFIANO LEATHER

Saffiano leather features a distinctive crosshatch texture pressed into the surface and finished with a protective coating.

It is durable, elegant and highly resistant to scratches, making it ideal for everyday use.

Common uses:
• Handbags
• Wallets
• Card holders
• Professional accessories

KANGAROO LEATHER

Kangaroo leather is uniquely Australian and renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio.

It is surprisingly thin and lightweight while remaining incredibly strong, making it ideal where flexibility and durability are both important.

Common uses:
• Wallet linings
• Earrings and jewellery
• Journal covers
• Lightweight bags and accessories

BUFFALO LEATHER

Buffalo leather is thick, strong and exceptionally durable.

It has a distinctive grain pattern and is well suited to products that need to withstand years of hard use.

Common uses:
• Belts
• Work belts
• Heavy-duty accessories
• Rugged everyday wear

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEATHER TYPES AND TANNING METHODS?

The animal hide and the tanning method are two different things.

For example, "vegetable tanned" describes how the leather was tanned, not which animal it came from.

A bovine (cowhide) leather may be vegetable tanned, chrome tanned, or combination tanned depending on the desired finish.

Likewise, different finishes such as pull-up, waxed, embossed or textured surfaces can be applied to create very different looks and performance characteristics.

HOW WE CHOOSE LEATHER

For belts, we often use thick vegetable tanned bovine leather (typically 3–4 mm) or durable buffalo leather.

For structured bags, we may choose firmer vegetable tanned or combination tanned leathers.

For softer, more relaxed bags, chrome tanned and pull-up leathers provide flexibility, comfort and beautiful character.

Every leather has strengths and weaknesses. There is no single "best" leather, only the best leather for a particular purpose.

Custom made. Hand stitched. Built to last.

Craig recently finished this fully custom leather sheath for a customer’s knife, replacing an old worn nylon holder with something worthy of the blade inside.

Hand cut, hand stamped, dyed and saddle stitched using premium veg tan leather…this one was made from scratch to perfectly fit the knife and the owner’s style.

No two pieces are ever exactly the same, and that’s the beauty of true handmade leatherwork.

Workbench update…

This one is taking shape tonight.

Black leather on the outside, hand stitched and finished with solid brass hardware.

Then you open it and… surprise.
A bold red snakeskin print sheep skin lining that absolutely insisted on being used.

Sometimes a piece of leather just tells you what it wants to become.

Still a little more stitching to go, but it’s getting close now.

Would you keep the outside classic black… or would you have gone bold on the outside too?

New style bifold wallet nearly finished. Hand stamped a cover design, burnished the edges and it’s ready to go.
Love the waxed roo interior and the contrast of the handstitched thread.
How do you like this new style?

We’ve quietly been setting up, but it’s time to say it properly…

Insomnia Leather now has a space at Deloraine Creative Studios

Craig has moved his leatherwork into the studio and is working from this beautiful creative hub in the heart of Deloraine every Friday (for now). You’ll find hand-made leather belts, stamped one by one, along with other beautifully crafted leather goods… all made slowly, properly, and with a lot of care. The studio itself is open 7 days a week for browsing Insomnia Leather and the work of other local artisans.

Alongside the finished pieces, Craig’s also been experimenting in the studio. One of these is a hand-carved Celtic knot design that will soon become a journal cover, and another is an early experiment pressing natural leaves into veg-tanned leather. A simple idea with loads of potential for future pieces and custom work.

And if you’re heading to the Deloraine Street Car Show this Sunday, it’s the perfect excuse to swing past. Pop into Deloraine Creative Studios, say hi to Craig (he’ll be there for the day), and have a wander through the spaces.

If you’ve been thinking about a custom leather piece: a journal cover, belt, or something a little different, come in, have a chat, and see what’s possible.

Really grateful to be part of such a creative community and excited to share the space with so many talented makers.

Handmade. Local. Built to last.

Insomnia Leather has been busy…

The workshop has been deep in research, design and testing mode lately, exploring new patterns, materials and construction methods. Many of the pieces in these photos are part of that process – small runs, prototypes, and ideas that turned into finished pieces.

A lot of what’s been coming off the bench lately are true one-offs. Experiments that worked too well not to share. Built from quality leather and made to be used and to last.

A selection of these pieces will be heading to World Street Eats – Launceston tomorrow:

📍 Civic Square
🕚 11am–3pm
đź“… Sunday

There’ll be wallets, belts, small leather goods, keyrings and a few special bags – including designs that may not be repeated.

Come for the food, wander the stalls, and take a look.

New coin pouches are popular.
