"I was replying to someone online recently who was opening up about navigating life with BPD and PTSD, and it really got me thinking.
Living with complex mental health challenges—or supporting someone who is—is exhausting. It pulls you in a million directions, and usually not by choice.
For so many of us, fashion and design work is our sanctuary. The process of creating something with your hands has this incredible, proven healing power.
But the reality is, we still have to pay the bills. And trying to force your creative healing to immediately pay rent? That adds a whole new layer of pressure.
If you're trying to balance your mental health with building a creative career, my biggest advice is to split the weight. Find a stable design role within the industry to secure your baseline income first. Take that financial panic off your shoulders.
Then, use your extra energy to build your own independent work—but keep it simple. Focus on the absolute simplest, most sustainable way to make a steady income from your craft.
Your creativity is a tool for your healing, not just your hustle. Take care of yourselves out there. If you ever need advice on the industry side of things, my door is always open."

🚀 Thinking About Starting a Fashion Side Hustle in Australia?

Every successful fashion brand started with one thing: a question.

❓ How do I design my first product?❓ Where do I find reliable manufacturers?❓ How much money do I need to start?❓ Should I sell online, at markets, or both?❓ How do I create sizing that actually fits Australian customers?❓ What legal and compliance requirements do I need to know?

After more than 20 years in tailoring, garment production, pattern making, customer service, and fashion business development, I've seen many passionate people give up on great ideas simply because they didn't know where to start.

The good news? You don't need a huge budget or a fashion degree to launch a clothing or fashion accessories business.

What you do need is:✅ A clear product concept✅ Understanding of your target customer✅ Basic knowledge of production and sourcing✅ Realistic costing and pricing✅ A simple marketing strategy✅ The willingness to learn and ask questions

Whether you're dreaming of launching:👗 Women's fashion👔 Menswear👜 Fashion accessories👟 Footwear🧵 Sustainable fashion🎨 Custom-made products

The fashion industry offers incredible opportunities for creative entrepreneurs willing to learn the fundamentals.

I'm passionate about helping aspiring fashion entrepreneurs avoid costly mistakes and build a stronger foundation from day one.

If you've ever wanted to start a fashion brand, clothing label, or accessories business, drop your question in the comments below or send me a message.

No question is too basic. Sometimes the smallest question can save thousands of dollars and months of frustration.

What's the biggest challenge stopping you from starting your fashion business today?

Most fashion designers focus heavily on aesthetics, branding and social media… but the real success of a garment often starts long before production.

It starts with the pattern.

Pattern making is the engineering of fashion.A beautiful sketch means nothing if the balance, fit, grading and construction are wrong.

Strong pattern making fundamentals can completely change the quality, profitability and sustainability of a fashion brand.

Here’s why:

✔ Better fit = fewer returns✔ Accurate patterns = less fabric waste✔ Balanced garments = better comfort and movement✔ Cleaner production = lower manufacturing costs✔ Consistent sizing = stronger customer trust✔ Smarter construction = longer garment lifespan

Many emerging brands lose money not because the design is bad… but because the technical foundation is weak.

A well-developed pattern allows factories to work efficiently, machinists to sew accurately and customers to feel confident wearing the garment.

Sustainability is not only about eco fabrics. It’s also about creating garments correctly from the beginning.

When designers understand pattern making fundamentals, they create products that:• last longer• fit better• waste less• and ultimately hold more value in the market

Fashion needs more designers who understand both creativity and technical ex*****on.

The future belongs to brands that combine design vision with engineering precision.
