Created in the heart of cosmopolitan Melbourne, each item seems like a vision from another, glamourous and enchanting place. You can picture them all being crafted under a canopy of antique Chantilly Lace, at the end of a pastel hued rainbow, to a soundtrack of 60s girl groups and a backdrop of 80s teen Prom flicks. Since the brand’s inception, this fashion maverick has managed to build a multi fa

ceted fashion business designed to inspire confidence and individuality in young women looking for that something special. Much loved by fellow contestants, viewers, and judges, Petrova finished as runner-up. Petrova continues to evolve and expand whilst staying true to the Lady Petrova signature style.

I couldn’t get a job in fashion.

I was told I was too creative.
That I’d get bored.
That I wasn’t quite right for the roles I was applying for.

And then one afternoon I found a flyer for a vintage lace sale.

I spent basically all the money I had on lace.

I had no business plan.
No investors.
No idea what I was doing.

Just a lounge room full of vintage lace and someone who said,
“Fabulous. Start your own label.”

So I did.

That was the beginning of Lady Petrova.

Looking back, I wonder how different my life would have been if one of those fashion jobs had actually said yes.

Sometimes the rejection really is the beginning of the story.

She Dreams in Colour, AW14.

In 2014 I made a collection inspired by Pre-Raphaelite poetry, sixties architecture, nineties memories, childhood bedrooms and the strange little worlds that existed inside my head.

I called it She Dreams in Colour.

Looking back at these photographs now, more than a decade later, I can see myself so clearly in them.

The pastels. The romance. The nostalgia. The slightly surreal girlhood. The belief that getting dressed could be an escape into another world.

Fashion has changed enormously since 2014.
I’ve changed enormously since 2014.

But strangely, the things I’m drawn to haven’t changed very much at all.

I still want women to wear clothes that make them feel like the most interesting version of themselves.

I still believe there’s room for fantasy.

And apparently, I still dream in colour.

I was told I would never be a fashion designer.

That I was too much. That I couldn’t “resolve” my designs. That maybe I should be a stylist instead.

At the time, I was devastated.

But looking back now, I realise that so much of what I was being told to edit out was exactly what made me me.

So this is for every artist, designer, maker and creative person who’s ever been told they’re too much, too weird, not commercial enough, not talented enough, or that they simply won’t make it.

Please keep making the thing only you could make.

No one else gets to decide what kind of artist you’re going to be.

The Snow Queen Dress is officially SOLD OUT.

I designed this dress 15 years ago, never imagining that all these years later I’d be back at my cutting table making her again — for women all over the world.

Thank you to every woman who ordered one, shared her, or simply fell in love with her. You’ve brought a little piece of Lady Petrova history back to life.

And if you missed out, this might not be the end…

I’m keeping the waitlist open, and if there’s enough interest, I may release the Snow Queen again towards the end of the year or sometime in the future.

A little love letter to the women who have brought the Snow Queen back to life.

Every time an order comes through, I see your name. I see where in the world she’s going. And then I get to begin making something especially for you.

It still feels quite surreal that 15 years after I first designed this dress, I’m back at my table in Melbourne, cutting the same beautiful lace, draping bodices by hand and disappearing underneath mountains of white tulle.

Except this time, the Snow Queen is travelling all over the world.

Thank you to every woman who has ordered one, whether you’ve chosen the original ready-to-wear Snow Queen or trusted me to create one to your measurements.

I know you’re waiting for her.

A few little things you might not know about the day Lana Del Rey walked into my Melbourne boutique…

Including the fact that she insisted on paying for her turban, the very fabulous name she was staying under, and what she was really like when she came into the shop.

I’ve told the Snow Queen Dress story before, but there are so many tiny details from that time that I’ve never shared.
