The Beeliar Wetlands;
Are one of Perth's most ecologically and culturally significant natural landscapes. This interconnected chain of freshwater and saline wetlands, nestled between coastal dunes and bushland, forms a rare and thriving habitat - right in the heart of Perth. Beeliar is more than just a wetland - it is a life support system. These wetlands provide: ~ Habitat for over 220 bird species, including migratory shorebirds protected under international agreements (RAMSAR) ~ Sanctuary for native turtles, frogs, fish and mammals, many of which are threatened and unique to the region, such as the Oblong Turtle and Carnaby's Cockatoo ~ Our greatest nature-based solutions to tackling climate change, ~Natural filtration and flood management through improving water quality and buffering our suburbs from extreme weather ~ Vital green space for people, offering walking trails, cultural spaces, and moments of peace in nature. Despite their importance and beauty, the Beeliar Wetlands face constant pressures from invasive species, urban development, pollution, and a changing climate. But together we can help save these critical natural havens. Come down to our focus sites at Bibra Lake and Forrestdale Lake and join us in our conservation efforts through: ~ Wetland planting and tree guard maintenance activities to support native seedlings, habitat connectivity and biodiversity ~ Weeding invasive plant species to restore habitats to their natural state, as well as other wetland rehabilitation activities ~ learn about your local wetland through educational sessions and activities, so that you can become knowledgeable about wetlands and species in your backyard and how you can support and protect them. It is up to us to make a difference and every little bit counts. Through our efforts we can help protect and restore wetland ecosystems so that they can continue their vital work in ensure we have clean air, healthy and biodiverse habitats, fresh water, and a safe future for everyone to enjoy.
