The fashion and textile industry values initiative, unique design interpretations, flexibility and lateral thinking, as well as skills in illustration, digital design, marketing and small business management. NMT's fashion program is the start of your pathway into a new and challenging career. NMT'S fashion and textile design courses are built around the recognition of current and future trends in

fashion, with an emphasis on good quality design and higher level skills. During your studies you will gain extensive knowledge in researching ideas, marketing, figure and design drawing, design pattern making, designing and printing textiles, and garment design and construction. Youโ€™ll have the unique opportunity to work in facilities dedicated to the creative arts and design, developing hands-on skills and new ideas in specialist studios and workshops. Fashion industry designers supplement the experience of lecturers in the fashion and design program at NMT, and enable students to engage in live projects, competitions and work experience within industry. Competition in the fashion and textile industry is intense and designers need to be guided by lecturers who have direct experience in the fashion world, are ahead of the trends, ready to adapt to changing market demands, new technologies and career opportunities. Designers work in a variety of environments such as fashion houses, design studios or retail fashion outlets. Some designers operate small or micro- businesses and are responsible for every aspect from the design concept to textile production, presentation and marketing of completed garments and accessories.

๐ŸŽŽ Artefact: Tea set trio 1890-1891
๐ŸŒŸ MEMENTO Exhibition ๐Ÿ“† April 9-24 ๐Ÿ“Perth Town Hall

This bone china trio, comprising cup, saucer and plate, is part of a larger tea set. It was produced at the Foley Pottery in England. Like a number of earlier items to come into History Westโ€™s collection, its story was not recorded, so we can only imagine the afternoon tea parties it must have graced.

Narrative:
โ€œLate in the 17th century, when England was stitching itself into the grain of the world, a Foley tea set trio was created in the rise of Orientalism and midday of an empire. With its porcelain as delicate as the flower petals found in its design, it first graced the shelves of a merchantโ€™s wife. Kept for safe keeping in a walnut cabinet it led a content and quiet life, brought into the world only when the most esteemed guests paid a visit. Over time the trio passed through hands softened by privilege and hardened by war, gracing one owner to the next with its replicated visage.

By the mid-nineteenth century, it found itself tucked into the trunk of a young Englishwoman, who boarded a ship bound for the Australian colonies. The trio was packed not in quaint sentiment, but rather through a stubbornness to preserve the prior identity and self-autonomy of the young woman, who felt it was the one thing in her turbulent journey that was truly hers. Through the rough storms and stale, airless weeks of life on the ship, she would trace in golden trim that glistened akin to the gold in the sun-struck land she spent her restless days dreaming ofโ€ฆโ€

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽ“ Designer: KARA WARNER
๐ŸŽŽ Artefact: Fly whisk Mid 1800s
๐ŸŒŸ MEMENTO Exhibition ๐Ÿ“† April 9-24 ๐Ÿ“Perth Town Hall

Horse-hair fly whisk with turned wooden handle. Whilst fly whisks had practical uses, they could also be ceremonial objects or signify rank and status. This one belonged to Sir Archibald Burt, who in 1861 was appointed the first Chief Justice of WA, a role he held for 16 years before returning to the West Indies, where he had been born.

Narrative:
โ€œShe arrived in Broome with the taste of salt already in her mouth, though she had not yet seen the sea. It came from fear, from the way her body had braced itself since the official letter arrived, explaining that her husband had been recruited, a polite word that disguised how little choice he had. Money had dried up back home, they said, and opportunity waited in the north of Western Australia, glittering like pearl shell beneath dangerous water.

They were housed in a narrow room in the Japanese quarter, its walls thin, the air heavy with sweat and kerosene. Segregation was never spoken aloud, only enforced through fences, glances, and rules that settled into daily life like dust. She learned where she could walk, where she should not linger, when her eyes must lower. At night, she lay awake listening to coughing and laughter from other rooms, all of them filled with women like her-wives of men who dove.

Her husband laughed when they told him why heโ€™d been chosen.

โ€˜Look at me,โ€™ he said, flexing his arms. โ€˜Nothing but bone and stubbornness.โ€™

She laughed too. If she didnโ€™t, the image would destroy her: his body sinking into green-black water, rope taut, lungs burning, the sea pressing in like a giant hand. They valued his strength, his brute stature, as the overseer called it, but not his gentleness, not the way he bowed to her each morning. Laughter made terror manageableโ€ฆโ€

Our Diploma of Fashion, Apparel and Textiles students also showcased their beautiful garments at our Council House exhibition this year!

The Diploma level extends on the skills learnt in the Certificate IV, where students refine their design voice through the experimentation of textile processes including knitwear, digital design and complex garment development. The photographs in this exhibition showcase the Mini Brand Project, where students were required to design a three-look collection inspired by their own concepts. Students then selected one look to make, integrating custom three- or four-layered screen prints, tailoring techniques and knitwear.

We are also looking forward to see you all back next year and canโ€™t wait to see your graduate collections! ๐Ÿคฉ
