Aussie 52 Week Challenge - Week 1

Clean your sewing space or sew something for your sewing space or sew something sewing related

Well cleaning is not an option, I'm going to have to sew my way out, but I did strip everything out and rearranged the furniture so I could get my big cutting table out to its' full size. I've sorted most of the fabric into separate piles based on composition, pattern, sets, my precious Japanese, Robert Kaufman and Jinny Beyer collections and a huge pile of random items that really shouldn't be in there.

I ended up finding some printed polycotton and a piece of quilted cot sized backing, so I made my machine mat. It's one of those things that I've never really thought about making and I'm kicking myself that I didn't do it sooner. It's certainly dampened the machine "noise" so I can do more of a night time now.

Oh wow… It’s 2023 what a big few years it’s been but now things are back to some semblance of normal for me, I’m hoping to get more sewing done.

I’ve started the year by challenging myself in The Aussie 52 Week Sewing Challenge. I’ve tried to do this in previous years but always ended up living vicariously through the other participants.

Incorporated in this challenge is my need to use only things within my sewing room barr necessary notions - no fabric purchases, no new pattern purchases, just whatever I have on hand.

I. Am. That. Woman. With. Too. Much. Fabric.

Kitchen sewing last night. Quillows are an interesting thing to make. Quillows are an interesting thing to fold. Quillows - quilt and pillow in one.

My baby came back from the doctor... such a wonderful machine. This is a Singer 201K built in 1939, found at our local tip by my husband's late father and left under the house for some time, until I discovered it and a 1913 treadle (which is still a little worse for wear) a few years ago.

As you can see it is electric but unlike modern machines it has a knee control instead of a foot pedal. It's also very quiet compared to the modern ones I use for the business.

It only does straight stitch which some people might think is very mundane but if you think about how high end clothes are tailored there really isn't any need for fancy stitches, plus the throat of the machine (the hole between the bulk of the machine and the silver needle plate) is quite large so it will make a great quilting machine.

What was happening in 1939 -

* Australia had 3 Prime Ministers - Joseph Lyons who passed away from a heart attack, Sir Earle Page who was the caretaker and Robert Menzies.

* The start of WW2

* The Black Friday bushfires in Victoria

* Rivette won the Melbourne Cup

* Seven Little Australians was on at the movies

* Vogue published their first fashion feature picturing women wearing trousers.

The nights are getting colder. The restrictions are starting to lift and its time to get organised for that moment when the markets are opened again. Do you think I have enough needles ?
