Keepsake bead 💎

I still can’t stop staring at these beauties!

Each bead is filled with umbilical cord and has different coloured flakes to represent each son.

This was my first time working with umbilical cord and it was a little daunting. But they turned out so perfect! 🤩

So thank you for continuing to support my small business and I’m return allow me to support you all on your breastfeeding or other journeys. 🤍

I have had a few complaints from clients recently which has rattled me a little as I put so much time and love into each handmade piece and hate to disappoint anyone. Please remember that they are just that - handmade so they won’t always be perfect.

I apologise for being quiet on here, I have been head down bum up trying to get through all the sale orders as well as dealing with sick children last week. But I’m excited to share more finished pieces with you over the next week. 🤍

Tag a mum below who needs to hear how amazing she is, cuz let’s face it we could all here it! x

Welcome!🤍

We have had a lot of new followers over the past couple of months. So I just wanted to say thank you for being here, I hope you can find comfort and joy (as well as some fun and laughter cuz that's who I am) along the way.

I also wanted to reintroduce myself. Hi, I'm Charlotte. The creator/crafter/business owner
of Eve and Ivory. I started this business after completing my own breastfeeding journey with
my fourth child.

Though his feeding experience was fairly smooth sailing, my other three weren't. My first had trouble latching right from the start, which caused severe ni**le damage (so bad
that my lactation consultant took photos).

I then resorted to feeding with a ni**le shield which inhibited my milk supply even more and
my son almost failing to thrive, to then comp feed with formula- by 6months I had made the
decision for everyone's health that formula feeding was the best decision for our son.

My second child came along and we started to have similar issues, he was then diagnosed
with a tongue tie which we had cut and from then on it was pretty good and I managed to
feed him for 18months.

When my daughter was born it was back to square one, right from when she was born she
was super clingy and would not sleep. I remember one night in hospital the midwife took her so I could try and get some sleep,
when she came back she stated how 'alert' she was! 😅

Since then she hasn't changed! She was attached to me like glue, I could not put her down and she would wake every 40mins and want to feed. She was also diagnosed with a
tongue and lip tie, they cut the tongue tie and wanted to wait to do the lip tie. I after retraining
her attachment the feeding eventually got better and I fed her til she was 22months.
So when I say I understand, I truly do.

I wanted to have a piece
of jewellery to celebrate all my attempts at breastfeeding, the bond we formed and the individual journey of each of my
experiences.

This is where Eve and Ivory was formed. I wanted other mums to cherish their unique journeys no matter how long or short, easy or hard. They all deserve cherishing.
So again, thank you for being here! It truly means the world to my family. 🤍

“I never thought I would breastfeed
even before falling pregnant I had
decided it probably wasn't for me.
In the last trimester I decided I
may as well give it a go. Our little
Lincoln was born weiging 2.77kg
and struggled to latch. He also
needed to spend some time in the
neonatal nursery due to low blood
sugar and constantly failing his
heel prick tests. The midwives had
tried formula and he was hooked
up to a glucose drip to keep him
going, but he continued to fail the
test. They encouraged me to
attempt to latch with him and
express every 3 hours to get some
colostrum to him. After a day or so
of doing this, he started to wake
more and was able to suck the
milk from a syringe, but still
struggled to latch. We tried sns,
feeding with a syringe and a tube,
but still nothing. Eventually I was
offered a ni**le shield, we used
this along with the sns for the first
few times until he got the hang of
it.

We used the shield for around 6
weeks until I gradually weaned him
from it. We've now been
exclusively breastfeeding for 13
months with no signs of stopping
any time soon. Our start was
rough, but I wouldn't change the
quality time I've had with our boy
for the world.” 💙

“My breastfeeding journey looks a bit different to the usual journey. Nursing didn’t come naturally to me or my babies, and I quickly turned to expressing to provide breastmilk to them. This photo is from my wedding day, expressing before my first glass of champagne. I exclusively pumped for 14 months with my first, and am currently 6 months in with my second baby. It’s what comes naturally to me now and I wouldn’t change my story one bit. My current breastfeeding journey has also allowed me to donate over 11 litres of breastmilk to King Edward Memorial Hospital here in Perth, and I’m incredibly proud of my body for being able to help so many NICU babies.”

“I started my breastfeeding journey
8.5 months ago with my little boy
Charlie. It has been full of tears,
joy and love.He was a natural
feeder from the start. At two days
old he was unfortunately admitted
to hospital for a week with an
infection, however we were lucky
enough to have a IBCLC nurse
looking after us. She provided
feedback that he was 'a beautiful
feeder' and that I'd 'never have
any issues with supply'. However,
upon returning home I became
unwell with a cold, and later
mastitis. Charlie started to
become extremely fussy at the
breast, and refused to latch and
began stagnating with weight
gains. This was the start of my
triple feeding and mixed feeding
journey due to experiencing low
supply issues. I mix fed and triple
feed (expressed milk after each
breast feed) from 6weeks-
months. It was the most draining
thing I have ever done, with
different weeks bringing different
challenges e.g. bottle preference, lack of family support 'just put him
on the bottle', more mastitis. Every
day I contemplated 'throwing in
the towel', but as hard as
breastfeeding was (moreso
expressing), I loved the bond I had
with my boy when it was working
well- our early morning snuggles,
deep eye contact, comfort. I also
truly believed that breastfeeding
was the right fit for us. With
Charlie's early exposure to
antibiotics and medical trauma,
his cows milk protein allergy and
lack of availability of suitable
formula, I was determined to make
it work. After 7 months I was
gradually able to remove the top
ups, and expressing, and I could
finally exclusively feed my boy
(yay for more time!). We both
cherish the breastfeeding
relationship and I'm so glad and
proud I persisted.
Here is a picture of us, Charlie
12weeks old, feeding at a wedding
(it was a cluster feeding marathon
of a night!)”

Breastfeeding looks different for every Mum. 🤱

Whether you struggled with feeding, only fed for 2weeks or 6months.

Whether you expressed short term or long term.

Whether you did combination feeding.

Or whether you did extended feeding.

All of these are perfectly ok. However you breastfeed, whether by choice or not is still breastfeeding.

And for those mums who decided not to breastfeed, that’s ok too! Your mental health needs to come first.

So tell me, what does your breastfeeding journey look like? 🤍

“Hi I'm Chantelle. Mumma to an
almost 4 mth old little boy called
Humphrey, before Humphrey I was
a nurse and midwife. I did
everything I could to have an
intervention free physiological
birth, I believed in my body's
ability to grow and bring him here
safely. The morning I thought I
was going into labour it turns out it
was actually my placenta coming
off the wall (placenta abruption)
and Humphrey dying. My waters
broke but in the water was all
blood. We rushed to the hospital
(where I work) and Humphrey was
born within the hour by
emergency caesarean where I was
put to sleep and my partner was
not allowed in the room.

The traumatic birth made it
difficult for me to bond with H.
How could I believe he was mine
when I hadn't seen him born? And
what was supposed to be the best
day of my life was the day we both
nearly died. H must have felt my
nerves because he was very
unsettled for the first few days. It
was really hard to latch him so
when he got on, no matter how
painful I just rode it out to get him
fed. This led to cracked and
bleeding ni**les within a week,
and then ni**le shields moving
forward. It's now almost four
months and I still can't get him to
latch, we're still using shields.

I've seen two different lactation
consultants and a chiropractor for
Humphrey. The chiro saw some
issues and fixed them each week
but it wasn't permanent. The
lactation consultants couldn't see
any issues, "just keep trying every
day" they said. The shields are
hard because Humphrey knocks
them off and they need to be
cleaned after every feed. Shields
impact on a baby's ability to drain
the breast efficiently so this also
means he feeds for longer and
more often for the same result.

My partner and so many family
members have insisted I need to
give it up and bottle or formula
feed. I wanted to breastfeed so
badly. It's the only part of my birth
story that I haven't lost.
People talk about how wonderful
breastfeeding is. I haven't been
able to feel that yet. It's hard work
every day. But I don't want to give
it up. I feel special because it's
something only I can share with
Humphrey, and we've needed to
work on our bond together.”
