CIAM HISTORY
CIAM (Centro Internazionale Alta Moda) Australia has been teaching patternmaking in Sydney since 1989 and is the only accredited school in Australia teaching the Guarino Method.
The Guarino Method was developed in Italy in the 1950s for the High Fashion (Alta Moda) industry, it uses a special set of graded rulers which minimise calculations for greater accuracy.
The rulers can be used to draft patterns for womenswear, menswear as well as childrenswear.
Learn to take measurements and create bodice, skirt and trouser blocks to create garments for daywear, special occasion, and bridalwear for all ages and sizes.
This method is suitable for home dressmakers, bridal wear creators and the garment industry.
We are in Belmore (main studio), Pennant Hills and now Lindfield.
There are several differences to other patternmaking methods:
• You use the upper chest measure (your own): this is more accurate than the bust measure as it better reflects the bone structure of the body.
• Personal adjustments are made to the block before you proceed with the actual design.
• The side seams are recessed to the back for a smoother fit.
• The method is designed so that a new drafting skill is introduced with each new pattern drafted.
• You will proceed at your own pace, through a series of patterns that develop your abilities in a logical manner and consolidate skills.
Being able to work at your own pace, means that you will never be rushed through a pattern and similarly you won't be held back by other students.
As part of the course, you will make 3 compulsory garments (from the patterns you have created in class) and learn the sewing techniques to achieve those garments with an emphasis on couture.
