A raw thought I wanted to share with fellow makers and supporters of handmade businesses...
We all work incredibly hard to come up with fresh new ideas and original designs, so naturally when we see our hard work being closely copied or reproduced, we become protective and defensive of it.
Some people say you should feel honoured that someone was inspired by your work, and to a degree, inspiration is absolutely part of every creative industry. But honestly, I don’t think people always realise just how much time, effort, research, trial and error, imagination and skill goes into developing original ideas and designs from scratch.
So just a gentle reminder to please respect fellow makers and their work. Be inspired, absolutely. But don’t blatantly copy another maker’s original designs and claim them as your own.
Use your own imagination. Develop your own skills. Put in the hard yards behind the scenes instead of piggy backing off somebody else’s creativity and years of hard work.
There is enough room in creative industries for originality, respect and authenticity 🤎
