Welcome to Where’s Wooly with me, Wooly Gong, your local guide! Every Wednesday I'll bring you a snapshot of some of my favourite local places and tell you a bit about the history.

This week I head to Wollongong Head Lighthouse and Flagstaff Hill Fort.

The Flagstaff Hill Fort dates to 1881 and consists of 3 cannons facing the north side of the harbour designed to defend Wollongong from naval attacks from possible Russian attacks during the late 1800s. The main cannons are 68-pounder guns that weigh nearly 5 tons each! A more modern cannon was built into the dugout, however, has since been destroyed leaving only the remnants of it. The fort was restored to the current arrange back in 1983 and brings tourists from all over to visit the historically recognised site.

In 1938, The Wollongong Head Lighthouse was constructed nearby to warn encroaching ships of the perilous rocks that line the coast of Flagstaff Point. The lighthouse stands at 25 metres tall and has been run automatically for the entire time since its construction. It was a fun day out, but the winds were so strong they nearly blew me away! 💨

Tomorrow is our last day at the pop-up stall in Wollongong Central!

It’s been an awesome opportunity to learn hands-on retail skills for our participants, promote local businesses from the Illawarra and increase the employment opportunities we offer at our Greenacres Enterprises through manufacturing our own line of imagine gifts and hampers.

We are so grateful to all of those who have visited our stall and purchased any of our items. Your purchases directly helps to provide employment for people with disability. We would like to thank all of our customers who have made this project success and Wollongong Central for their support as well.

We are very excited to see what 2023 has in store for us! Keep watching this space for updates on what’s next for us ✌️

Good to catch up with Santa 🎅 in the mall today. Get a photo with Santa to support Greenacres Disability Services or stop in at their pop-up store in Wollongong Central and purchase some of their great Wooly Gong Loves products for Christmas presents.

This week we are going to the WIN Entertainment Centre (WEC)! The WIN Entertainment centre opened in 1998, with the first performance being Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. The WEC is used for a wide range of purposes including conventions, expos, concerts, and sporting events. Since opening, the WEC has been host to many acts, both home grown and international, including P!nk, Guy Sebastian, Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran, as well as many more.

The WEC is also the home of the Illawarra Hawks, which is my favourite NBL team! The largest attendance at the stadium was for the Illawarra Hawks vs Sydney Kings season final where nearly 6000 people attended. The next Hawks game is on the 16th of December, and they’ll go up against the Sydney Kings again. Can’t wait to watch that one! 👀
