Story of the Garments Industry in Bangladesh
🌱 Early Beginnings (1970s – 1980s)

After independence in 1971, Bangladesh was one of the poorest countries in the world.

The Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry started in the late 1970s with very small factories.

The first big push came in 1978, when Desh Garments partnered with a South Korean company (Daewoo). They trained Bangladeshi workers and managers, creating the base of today’s industry.

🚀 Rapid Growth (1990s – 2000s)

Global demand for cheap clothing shifted toward Bangladesh because of:

Low labor cost

Large workforce

Government incentives (tax benefits, duty-free imports for raw materials).

By the 1990s, thousands of factories opened, employing millions (mostly women).

The scents of damp cotton and cheap perfume mingle in the humid Dhaka air.

A teenage vendor in a stained T‑shirt leans against the van’s frame, idly rolling a worn cigarette between his fingers. He glances at each passerby without interest, even as a customer holds up a threadbare denim jacket, squinting to read the faded tag: “Made in Bangladesh, 100% cotton.” The jacket’s frayed cuffs hint at past journeys—perhaps through factory floors or second‑hand piles.
