Crochet did not exist in 1500 BC, though ancient techniques like nålebinding and weaving are sometimes mistaken for it. In the early 1800s, modern crochet using a single hook became popular in France, Ireland, and England, and by the 1820s the first written crochet patterns appeared, helping the craft spread widely.
