বাংলাদেশের পোশাক খাত মাত্রাতিরিক্ত কটন-নির্ভর, অথচ বিশ্ববাজার দ্রুত ঝুঁকছে নন-কটনের দিকে। ধীরগতির এই রূপান্তরের কারণে বিশ্ববাজারের সঙ্গে আমাদের ব্যবধান কমার বদলে বরং বাড়ছে। এলডিসি-উত্তরণ পরবর্তী শুল্ক-সুবিধা হ্রাস ও ক্রেতাদের ক্রমাগত মূল্য-চাপ মোকাবিলায় টিকে থাকতে হলে নন-কটন খাতে বিনিয়োগ, দক্ষ জনবল তৈরি ও অবকাঠামো উন্নয়ন এখন সময়ের দাবি। শুধু কটনের ভরসায় আগামী দিনের প্রতিযোগিতায় টেকা যাবে না — তাই আর দেরি না করে এখনই সুনির্দিষ্ট পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া দরকার।

My quote in Mongabay.com "Denim Expert Ltd, for example, is a garment manufacturer that wanted to install rooftop solar but could not proceed with plans to do so after failing to secure financing.

“A few years ago, we planned to install a 1-megawatt rooftop solar system with financing from IDCOL,” Mohiuddin Rubel, additional managing director of Denim Expert Limited, told Mongabay. “However, we could not secure the funding because of lengthy bureaucratic procedures.”

Rubel said access to finance remains one of the biggest obstacles. Although Bangladesh Bank and IDCOL offer concessional financing for RET, factories often have to invest their own money first and wait for reimbursement, tying up scarce working capital for months.

“Many manufacturers simply cannot lock up that amount of capital for several months,” he said."

Bangladesh's Next Growth Frontier: Moving Beyond Cotton

Bangladesh's apparel exports are still 72.7% cotton — nearly double the world average of 41.6%.
While Vietnam (34.8%), China (29.4%), and Cambodia (41.9%) have shifted heavily toward non-cotton and man-made fibers, Bangladesh remains one of the most cotton-reliant major exporters, behind only Pakistan (85.1%) and India (74%).
The direction is already right. Bangladesh's man-made fiber share has grown from 11.3% in 2016 to nearly 17% today — the shift has started; it just needs to move faster.

Four things can accelerate it:
1. Faster investment in synthetic & technical fiber processing, dyeing and finishing capacity
2. Targeted training for technicians skilled in non-cotton fabric handling
3. Reliable, adequate energy supply for energy-intensive synthetic dyeing
4. Stronger policy incentives to draw local and foreign investment into non-cotton capacity — the way Cambodia and Indonesia did

Cotton remains Bangladesh's strength, and that's not going away. But building real capability in non-cotton categories is how the industry moves from competing on volume to competing on value — especially with LDC graduation reshaping the trade landscape ahead.

EU Apparel Imports Fall 9.70pc in H1 2026; Bangladesh Mixed — Up 0.87pc in June, Down 16.43pc for the Half-Year

The EU's apparel imports from the world fell 9.70 percent in January-June 2026, to €41.10 billion, according to Eurostat data compiled by Bangladesh Apparel Voice. Both the amount imported (down 6.40 percent) and the average price (down 3.53 percent) fell.
For Bangladesh, June alone looked better: exports rose 0.87 percent to €1.37 billion, as the country shipped 6.53 percent more goods, even though prices fell 5.31 percent. But over the full six months, the picture was weaker — exports fell 16.43 percent to €8.64 billion, hit by both lower volume (down 8.22 percent) and lower prices (down 8.94 percent).
Other major suppliers also fell: China (-8.88%), Turkey (-14.60%), India (-12.49%), Pakistan (-12.53%), Sri Lanka (-11.21%), and Cambodia (-8.84%). Only Vietnam grew, up 0.36 percent. It shipped 11.52 percent less, but raised prices by 13.43 percent — the biggest price increase of any major supplier — which was enough to offset the lower volume. Indonesia and Cambodia also raised prices, but their volumes fell too sharply to turn that into growth.
