To keep climate change under control, our CO₂ emissions need to be curbed. And to help us do that, several think tanks have created a ‘personal annual climate budget.’ As the name implies, this is the amount of CO₂ that we can emit and not a bit over. This is pegged at 2300kg of CO₂.
As you can see from our graph, a long haul flight of approximately 12,000+ km far exceeds our annual climate budget per person.
So what are we to do? We don’t think a world where we don’t visit countries that are far from us is possible or desirable anymore, let’s be real.
So how can we solve this? Here are some solutions we came up with:
when possible taking the train or bus is a great alternative
inquire about alternative fuels for airplanes
fly with airlines that have some sort of climate compensation program
a call for return and use of airships
Can we as individuals monitor our own carbon emissions or should the government do this for us? Will our individual efforts be effective without systemic change? Let us know your thoughts, comments, fears, accomplishments in curbing your carbon emissions.
