BATSWANA FAKE RITUAL KILLING THREATS TO OBTAIN UK ASYLUM

International Relations Minister Phenyo Butale recently revealed to Parliament that an influx of Batswana are exploiting the United Kingdom's asylum system by fabricating fears of ritual killings. This follows the UK's decision to impose strict visa requirements on Batswana travelers.
While ritual killings remain a legitimate societal concern and criminal threat in Botswana, officials insist the panic driving these foreign asylum applications is fundamentally false.
Authorities maintained that individuals are weaponizing local anxieties to bypass standard immigration pathways rather than fleeing actual persecution. One Motswana is reported to have said she fled because she believed she was next in line to be sacrificed.
By sensationalizing these threats in the UK, some Batswana are heavily misrepresenting Botswana's human rights record. This behavior directly led to the cancellation of visa-free access to the UK.
Rather than genuinely seeking refuge from domestic terrors, Parliamentarians argue that economic migrants are being organized by human smuggling rings to exploit host nations under fraudulent pretenses, jeopardizing diplomatic relationships and tightening global mobility for all citizens.
