✨ Fun Fact: When the Heligoland–Zanzibar Treaty was signed on 29 July 1890, Tswana chiefs in Bechuanaland were watching closely. Even though the treaty was about swapping a tiny German island for Zanzibar, it indirectly reassured the chiefs that Britain was serious about holding onto southern Africa. In fact, just five years later (1895), Khama III, Bathoen I, and Sebele I travelled all the way to London to petition Queen Victoria in person, A rare moment when African leaders directly influenced British imperial policy.

It’s a fascinating twist: a treaty about a North Sea island ended up shaping the fate of Tswana land thousands of miles away!
