My nonno Vincenzo arrived from Italy as a young man, carrying his talent and skill in the time-honoured tradition of sartoria. Here in Toronto he continued this craft through to retirement and beyond, not just at work but at home on evenings & weekends, creating gorgeous and timeless suits and coats, which many of us wear to this day.
When he passed in 2010 I inherited the beautiful textile remnants and notions that he left behind. My own work began to shift, incorporating old with new, sentimental with practical, and I developed this passion for repurposing materials that is my main focus today. I feel privileged to carry on his legacy in my own way, blending past, present and future.
Now I am so proud to be bringing together pieces of both of our work, along with some precious artifacts, as part of a special exhibit dedicated to Italian Canadian arts & heritage.
Come check it out this Monday evening!
