Indigenous graphic design, business coaching and consultant services. TAANISII KIYAWOW! KAIJA HEITLAND DINISHIIKASHOON. AEN MICHIF NIYA, VANCOUVER ISLAND DOOSHCHIIN. My name is Kaija Heitland and I am a Métis woman living on Vancouver Island, on the traditional lands of the Cowichan tribes. I belong to the Cowichan Valley Métis Community, and am originally from Northern Ontario. In all my work, I

focus on the need to reconnect to our traditional arts as a method for self-reclamation and strengthening our community bonds. These investigations into ourselves are essential to the preservation and evolution of Metis art and I focus on many different avenues including fabric, ceremonial items, moccasins, jewellery and regalia. I explore animal symbolism, plant medicine, and traditional food plants in my work, as these designs are an important part of our rich Métis culture of storytelling, and the story of our place in the culture of Indigenous British Columbia. I began my company, Indigenous Nouveau, as a platform to help to facilitate a greater visibility for my community and the Métis who reside in British Columbia, to showcase our unique beadwork and quillwork patterns, arts culture and history. We are experiencing a renaissance in both our appreciation and our approach to our traditional arts and I find that truly exciting. We, as a culture, are waking up and feeling our strength and vitality and it is wonderful to see that expressed in the art and music being created presently. Currently, my main focus has been teaching traditional land-based arts, giving instruction on beadwork, quillwork and the teachings of the Ribbon Skirt and how to incorporate these teachings into our daily paths. Ki’nanaskou mitinowow! Maarsii,

Kaija

Ooooh! She's back in stock baby!

Due to shipping and supply chain issues, It has been very difficult to get a hold of all of the materials I need to make this fabulous thread conditioner, but I am happy to announce that they are back in stock! Go to my website and use either of the codes in this post to get either 5% or 10% off of your overall order, and heck, pick up a set of thread conditioners while you're at it for cozy winter crafting.

It is the last day to order your felt poppy brooch workshop kit for me to be able to get them out to you so that you can attend the live online class on November 2nd. The recording will be available if you wish to take this class later and cannot make the November 2nd date, but please register as soon as possible so that you can get your poppies for indigenous veterans Day and Remembrance Day this year.

Update: This class will include materials for two poppies as well as real 24 karat gold plated Charlotte cut beads and a strawberry keychain!

The link for my winter workshop series is in my bio and can also be found here:

Please note the shipping dates on each of these classes as they are separate. If you wish to take more than one class, unfortunately you will have to check out with multiple shipping costs at this time, as the classes are staggered over 3 months.

Thank you so much for your continued support through all of the tariff issues in Canada Post strikes. Small businesses are doing their absolute best to provide you with service and products, but it is becoming increasingly stressful and expensive for us to continue running our businesses. Thank you for your grace and patience.

Some of the cutoff dates for my winter series workshops are getting close so please register as soon as possible to secure your spots!
Registration open on the website now! Limited entry for every class is firm. Link in my bio! https://www.indigenousnouveau.com/shop-ubAjk

Now that the summer is almost over (I’m so sorry!) we need to start planning our winter projects! I am very happy to announce my fall and winter workshop series, based on your own polling results! You told me you wanted to do a simpler poppy than my current available kit, a holiday ornament and a beaded cuff, so that’s what I’ve put together for you!

We will be doing two more entry level projects (with modifications for more advanced beaders) and a more advanced project for intermediate beaders. For me, what determines the difference between a beginner and an intermediate project is the amount of time and attention to detail that the overall project requires, not necessarily the individual skills. (Edit: the pearl cabochon on the poppy project is real mother of pearl! Not artificial.)
please take a look at my link tree in my bio and go directly to my shop on my website to register for these classes for the fall. I will be very firm with the class numbers this time around, as the number of kits I ended up doing for last-minute entries to beadwork summer camp was a little bit more than expected.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions about the classes!

The kits on my website are the very last ones that will include smoked and brain tanned hide in them!

Through a lot of deliberation, I have come to the realization that I'm no longer going to be able to include smoked and brain tanned and hide in my kits. The cost of traditionally tanned hide has increased proportionately to the amount of effort and cultural inheritance that it takes to make these beautiful hides, but unfortunately it now puts them out of the price range of me being able to include them in my kits. For a large thin beautiful deer hide, I am often paying upwards of $800 or $900, and for a moose hide the price is over $5000-6000.
While I am certainly sad that I'm not going to be able to provide this absolutely wonderful indigenous material in my kits anymore, I will always provide the most ethical options that I can. The new hides that I have sourced are all of Indigenous origin from sustenance hunting from rural communities that are sent to tannerries and are treated with the utmost care and ecological considerations. I will still be using moose and deer for the most part and for my earring kits thin deer hide will be used.
If you want any of the kits that still have hide traditionally tanned and smoked hide in them, they are currently on my website and will not be available again in their current incarnation.

I haven't been posting a lot of my own work lately, but I had the honor and privilege of participating in a master class held by Gregory Scofield on the split toe or pointed toe moccasin, along with other leading beadwork artists and knowledge keepers in our community.

I wanted these dance slippers to feel and look as though they would have been someone's prized possession, only taken out for special occasions and loved and cherished as an heirloom. All of the beads I used are antique and vintage Czech, Venetian and French, some dating from the 1880s themselves. The ribbon is antique silk, and the horsehair wrapping uses antique French silk floss from 1910 to 1925. The smoked and tanned moose hide was provided to us for the class.

I used motifs from my study of Red River and Norway House Cree-Métis embroidery.

Although they are incredible to use, especially when making heirloom pieces such as these, using antique and vintage materials has its challenges. The ribbon is so delicate, and requires a delicate hand. The vintage silk floss, although it has been stored away from the light and humidity, can be brittle and delicate at times, and requires a lot of patience to use properly.

Thank you so much, maarsii, to for providing such incredible programming and for this opportunity as well to Gregory Scofield for his generosity, skill and the cultural inheritance and knowledge that he brings to our community.
