Province Announces Highway 63 Commitments, Including Potential RMWB Takeover

Mayor Sandy Bowman, after meeting with Alberta's Ministry of Transportation, has announced that the province has committed to speeding up work on Highway 63 and Highway 881, including pothole repairs, road repairs, highway cleaning, and line painting. The province has also committed to providing public updates every two weeks so residents can see what work is planned.

One of the biggest developments is that Alberta Transportation and the RMWB will explore an agreement that could see the municipality take over spring and summer maintenance of Highway 63 from the Municipal Landfill to the Highway 686 turnoff. That could give the RMWB a much bigger role in road repairs, pothole maintenance, cleaning, line painting, and beautification along the corridor.

Do you think local control would lead to better results on Highway 63, or should the province remain fully responsible for maintenance?

Community-Led Highway 63 Demonstration Planned for Tomorrow, June 12

Anyone who wants to attend a community-led demonstration about Highway 63 is invited to gather at 9:00 a.m. Friday, June 12. The event will take place across from Earls Kitchen + Bar.

What started as a conversation about Fort McMurray's pothole problems has turned into a much bigger effort, with volunteers, contractors, local businesses, Indigenous leaders, elected officials, emergency services, and residents all getting involved.

After the demonstration, some of the volunteers and equipment operators plan to head out and work on sections of Highway 63 through town, with the focus expected to be between Confederation Way and Beacon Hill.

Motorcyclist Caught Doing 164 km/h Near Thickwood Overpass on Highway 63 🏍️

According to Play 103.7, a motorcyclist is scheduled to appear in court next month after RCMP say they were caught travelling 164 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near the Thickwood Boulevard overpass on June 4.

Police say officers spotted a red Honda motorcycle moving through traffic at a high rate of speed before recording the rider's speed at 164 km/h.

The rider was issued a summons and is scheduled to appear in Fort McMurray court on July 24.

For context, that's more than double the posted speed limit.

Imagine hitting one of Fort McMurray's potholes on a motorcycle at 164 km/h 😬

🏒 Fort McMurray's Northside Twin Arena Is Moving Closer To Opening

After years of discussion and planning, Fort McMurray's Northside Twin Arena at 117 Abraham Place is nearing completion and is currently expected to open in Fall 2026.

Many hope the facility could help attract more tournaments, visitors and activity to the community, while also creating additional ice time for local athletes and families.

According to Marshall-Lee Construction, the 8,000 m² facility is expected to include two ice surfaces, seating for 300 spectators per ice sheet, concession space, 10 change rooms, 2 referee rooms and 250 parking spots.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has previously listed the project at an estimated $50 million, while Marshall-Lee Construction's project page lists a project budget of $39.6 million.

With a multi-million-dollar price tag and the potential to bring more events and visitors to Fort McMurray, do you think this project will be a win for our community?

After days of growing frustration over the condition of Highway 63, local businessman Mohamed Tarrabin says a community-led pothole repair effort is being planned for Friday at 10:00 AM.

In an update shared Thursday, Tarrabin said contractors, local businesses, Indigenous leaders and residents have stepped forward to support the initiative. He says asphalt has been secured and that traffic control measures, signage and other safety precautions are being planned.

At the same time, residents have been reporting seeing road crews out repairing potholes along sections of Highway 63.

Are we seeing more attention and repair efforts because of the growing public pressure, because warmer weather is finally making repairs possible, or is it something else entirely?

Fort McMurray Made A Surprise Appearance In The Dexter Finale 👀

A resident Ian Goodwin recently pointed out that footage shown on TV during the hurricane scenes in the final episode of Dexter appears to actually be footage from Fort McMurray.

The footage is shown as part of the hurricane coverage throughout the episode, but locals quickly recognized scenes that looked a lot more like Fort Mac than Miami. 🎬

Not every day Fort McMurray ends up making a cameo in one of the most talked-about TV finales of all time.

🚧 FORT MCMURRAY RESIDENTS HAVE REACHED THEIR BREAKING POINT WITH POTHOLES, LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY

Some defend the RMWB, noting that many of the worst potholes are on Highway 63, which is maintained by the province, while city streets have seen more regular pothole repairs.

Others argue the municipality could be doing more to pressure and advocate for repairs given the severity of the situation.

While some have made the argument that this year's heavy snowfall, freeze-thaw cycles, and high levels of precipitation have made pothole season particularly severe, with permanent repairs only now becoming feasible.

What everyone seems to agree on is that our roads are horrible and it's costing residents a lot of time, money, and frankly, just pi***ng people off now.

Where do you stand on the issue?

🐻 A bear encounter in Thickwood yesterday has sparked plenty of discussion about bear spray and wildlife safety.

One topic that often comes up is when bear spray should actually be deployed. Some people say spray early, while others say waiting until the bear is within 10 feet is more effective.

What do you think?

Have you had a bear encounter of your own? What are the most important things people should know about carrying and using bear spray?
