A little boat with a very important mission has turned up near Parsons Creek. ❤️

It looks like the boat was set sail by a kid named Sebastian in July, complete with little figures, fishing gear and handwritten notes for anyone who finds it.

One note says, “Hi, my name is Sebastian. Please can you push back, we are trying to get to Nunavut. Thank you.” Another says, “Tuktoyaktuk or bust,” asks whoever finds it to give it a push, and even includes contact information with the promise of a reward for getting in touch. 🥹

The person who found it did exactly that and put it back in the water to continue its adventure.

Who knows how far this little boat has already travelled? 👀

A food delivery driver has been charged following an alleged sexual assault in Fort McMurray.

RCMP say a resident reported being sexually assaulted after answering the door to receive a food delivery on May 16.

The suspect wasn’t identified right away. Police say witness statements, surveillance footage and further investigation eventually led them to a suspect.

Deepak Kumar, 34, was arrested on Sept. 5 and charged with sexual assault. He was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in Fort McMurray court on Sept. 23.

RCMP say the incident appears to be isolated.

Alberta is testing a 120 km/h speed limit on a section of Highway 2, and the early numbers are interesting.

Between May 5 and July 27, RCMP recorded 71 collisions in the pilot area, down 17% from 85 during the same period last year.

The province is using the pilot to see how a higher speed limit works before deciding what could happen on other divided highways.

And that’s where it gets interesting for Fort McMurray. Highway 63 is one of the divided highways that has been part of Alberta’s discussion around potentially increasing speed limits to 120 km/h.

Nothing has been decided for Highway 63 yet.

If you make the drive north of Fort McMurray for work, chances are you’ve passed the Gateway Hill sign more times than you can count.

For many commuters, it’s a familiar sight. But there’s quite a bit of history behind it.

Gateway Hill wasn’t actually mined. It was built to hold millions of cubic metres of overburden, the soil, sand and clay removed to reach oil sands at a nearby mine. What had once been flat, low lying terrain was reshaped into a hill about 40 metres high.

Work to restore the site started in the early 1980s and continued in stages. Soil was replaced and trees and shrubs were planted. Over the decades, forest and wetlands developed across the landscape.

In 2008, Gateway Hill made history as the first oil sands site in Alberta to receive a reclamation certificate.

Today, you can walk through it along the Matcheetawin Discovery Trails. 🌲

Wood Buffalo RCMP have released an update following the Sept. 4 arrest at MacDonald Island Park.

RCMP say they responded at approximately 3:25 pm to a report of a suspicious male who had been approaching and bothering female youth near the running track inside the facility. Police located and arrested the man without incident.

A 48-year-old Fort McMurray resident is facing allegations of four counts of criminal harassment. RCMP say his name is being withheld in anticipation of a publication ban.

The man was held for a judicial interim release hearing and has since been released from police custody on a Promise to Pay with conditions. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 16.

RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing.

Fort McMurray stands out in several Canadian stats, with a few numbers that might surprise you. 👀📊

94th, Canadian City Ranking
Fort McMurray ranks 94th out of 343 Canadian cities in OpenStats Canada’s 2025 City Score.

The ranking compares cities across eight categories, including population growth, crime severity, broadband speeds, residential tax rates and building permit values.

33.3, Average Age
Fort McMurray had an average age of 33.3 years in the 2021 Census. The median age was slightly higher at 34.4 years.

$186,000, Median Household Income
Fort McMurray’s median household income was $186,000 in 2020, according to the 2021 Census.

$1,313, Average Asking Rent
Fort McMurray had the lowest average asking rent among the Canadian markets included in Rentals.ca’s August 2026 National Rent Report, at $1,313 for purpose-built and condo apartments.

If you’ve driven down Fraser Avenue, chances are you’ve noticed the little house filled with antiques.

This year, Sweet Antiques is celebrating 10 years in Fort McMurray, but the story started long before the shop opened in August 2016.

The owner has been fascinated by antiques since childhood. After getting married, she discovered her husband shared her interest. Over the years, antique shops and flea markets became some of their favourite places to explore while travelling, searching for unusual finds and learning the history behind them.

Eventually, that shared interest led to the idea of opening a shop of their own.

The Fraser Avenue house was originally residential before the property was rezoned for commercial use. In 2016, it became home to Sweet Antiques.

Today, the family-run shop is filled with finds from auctions, estate sales and connections built over the years. Some pieces date back centuries, including coins from the 1800s and what the owners describe as rare 16th-century drinking horns.

Sweet Antiques tries to have something for every taste, while listening to community feedback and making people feel welcome when they walk through the door.

Supporting other small businesses is also important to the owners, who believe in businesses helping one another in the community.

A big part of what Sweet Antiques stands for is giving old things another life. “We only have one earth,” the owner says, with recycling and protecting the environment being an important message they want to share with others.

Ten years later, the little house on Fraser Avenue is still giving pieces from the past another chapter.
