Our Story
I am a self-taught seamstress and have been creating clothing and jewellery since I was a child. I started out by making beaded necklaces and gimp bracelets for myself and my friends, and clothes for my dolls. Eventually I learned how to use the sewing machine, thanks to my mom, and started creating patchwork hats, bell bottoms and tops for myself and my friends. I continued to sew just for myself and my friends until 2006, when I decided it was time to try and make some money off of my talents.
I have always used second hand fabric. Starting from childhood when I would raid my mothers fabric stash, and cut up my own clothing to make something new, I have had a love for the reused. There is something that comes over me when I find a piece of material that I like - it speaks to me, and tells me what it wants to become. Many of my pieces are made using linens, table clothes, second hand clothing, game pieces, curtains and other found materials. Because of this, I consider all of my items to be one of a kind.
I started out as a vendor at craft shows and music festivals in the Regina, Saskatchewan area, selling along side my friend Katie, as Rejected.Reused.Reworn. Our re-purposed, upcycled clothing and accessories were a hit, and so I opened my Etsy shop in 2007 and business has slowly been growing ever since. I moved to Vancouver Island in 2011, and Abigail Road came with me. I sold at craft shows and festivals in the Greater Victoria area throughout the year, continued to run my Etsy shop, and offered custom clothing, and branched out into my own alterations business, which I called "Upcycled Alterations". I wanted to help teach people how to reuse and re-purpose their clothing and other household fabrics - not only to recycle, but to save themselves money. I encouraged customers to come to me with their own fabric and ideas, so we can create a piece together.
In 2017 I closed my Etsy shop, and took some time off to be with my children and reevaluate what I wanted to do with the Abigail Road brand, if anything. 2018 found my family back on the prairies, this time in a small town called Gravelbourg, and the change of scenery and the people gave me the urge to get creating again.
