Welcome to Montreal Caribbean Fashion Week 2017! Benefiting the Triumph Through Adversity Scholarship Program, granting scholarships for youth, April 19-22, 2017 marks the 2nd edition of Montreal Caribbean Fashion Week (MCFW) entitled, with the exciting theme “Chaud Carib”. Spearheaded by Gemma Raeburn and her associates, alongside celebrated Fashion Impresario Richard Young of Trinidad and Tobago

, Montrealers will have the opportunity to celebrate their 375th Anniversary with the beauty and panache of Caribbean fashion and culture.


“Chaud Carib” brings the sophistication of the Caribbean alive on the runway while promoting the Caribbean fashion industry, its music, arts and culture, with a creative team direct from the Caribbean, and over 1000 people in attendance over a 3 day exposition, MCFW will define the Caribbean region and foster the sustainable development of the local, national and international Caribbean fashion industry. Show features over 30 aspiring models, local and from other parts of Canada, the United States and across the Caribbean. Over 30 local and International designers will join Caribbean fashion expert Richard Young, Montreal’s famed Choreographer Dale King and fashion show producer Gemma Raeburn-Baynes to inspire attendees and bring the City of Montreal to life in celebration of its 375 Anniversary. he Roots of English Black Arts & Culture," presented by Playmas Montreal Cultural Association and funded by Government of Canada, aims to preserve and celebrate the diverse traditions within the English Black community in the Montreal region.

The initiative will offer a series of cultural activity workshops from October 2024 to February 2025, educating participants about our rich heritage. The program will culminate in a great exhibition of our English Black Arts and Culture happening in March 2025.

The first set of 7 workshops entitled Griot Night will be facilitated by professionals in the field of storytelling, poetry and calypso.

Introduction to the Roots of English Black Arts & Culture Program

We are excited to introduce you to the Roots of English Black Arts & Culture program, an initiative by Playmas Montreal Cultural Association that focuses on celebrating and preserving the rich traditions of storytelling, music, poetry, and craftwork rooted in Black English culture. The program aims to engage participants in an immersive experience that explores the intersections of West African and Caribbean cultural traditions through various art forms.

The program will span over several months, leading up to a grand final showcase in March 2025, and will feature workshops led by expert facilitators in calypso, poetry, beading, Carnival headpiece design, and quilting. Each workshop will incorporate both theory and hands-on learning, with participants working toward creating a performance or craftwork that will be featured in the final event.

Playmas Montreal Cultural Association is looking for Black Grade 11 students in Montreal and surrounding areas to participate in the GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program. Please pass the word around. $1500 Scholarship is being offered to each student.

The GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program focuses on empowering students through a combination of financial support, mentorship, and leadership development. It is basically to uplift Black high school students in Quebec by combining financial aid with valuable career-building experiences.

I started the GemStar Circle of Excellence Program on my Birthday in September 2022. The program is now going into its 3rd year. Since then, we have graduated 20 students with a total of $24,000 in Scholarships, and $1,000 Scholarship to a Culinary Student in Grenada.

This Fall, we’re celebrating our rich heritage with two dynamic workshops that you won’t want to miss.

**Griot Night** kicks off the week of October 13th to November 23rd, with 3-hour weekly sessions that dive deep into the art of storytelling, poetry, and calypso.
Then, from the week of November 24th to January 26th, join us for **Crafting Connections**, where you’ll master quilting, beadwork, and carnival headpiece designing over 8 creative weeks.
