The title of my business, Sew Dutch by Alet, refers to my lifelong love affair with sewing and my Dutch roots. My father Daniel Appelo was a professional tent maker in Holland, and I grew up working with fabrics and learning about design from a young age. My sister Sophia operated the family fabric store where I worked for 5 years, before immigrating to Canada in 1980 to join my future husband. In
February 2015, the day our grand-daughter Romy was born, I ran home from the hospital to make my first all-pink cotton pennant. And within a short period of time, I dusted off my sewing machine and sang ... "Reunited and it feels so good !"... A few short months later in May 2015, I did my first craft show and Sew Dutch by Alet was born. I create all my own unique designs and sew each item with love and attention. My main goal is to offer high quality products that spark the imagination and encourage creative play! My Table Forts, Play Tents and Puppet Theatres help build communication skills, promote self-expression and offer an important alternative to “screen time”. The Table Forts and Play Tents are extremely quick to set-up. They are made of cotton, which makes them a light, airy and safe hide-away from an overstimulating world. Children TABLE FORTS have a window large enough to use as a puppet theater. A front door that can open or close plus a small mail box for love letters. A small window just for fun and pockets on the inside for books and games. Perfect on hot days as a cool resting place, away from the sun. Simply drape over your dining room table and the fun can start. Very little work for the parents and lots of fun for the little ones. There are many designs to chose from. PLAY TENTS have bamboo poles for their strength and flexibly. Always a mail box for love letters. Place a small basket, wherever you are in the house and you can exchange letters and drawings, for a great creative interaction. There is always a pocket on the inside for books and toys. Some of the play tents front doors are made with vintage sheets which give them a very playful and unique look. On hot summer days bring the play tent outside as a cool and relaxing place to hang out after playing in the sun. As I mentioned before PENNANTS were my very first products and are the Sooooo Dutch, in Sew Dutch by Alet. In Holland, birthdays and other special occasions are often celebrated by hanging colourful pennants all over the house. Consequently, I have a collection of double-sided fabric pennants, and a fun collection of paper pennants designed from vintage or aviation maps, children’s books and cartoon books. Often my new products start from a need, and the VENDORS APRONS are proof of that. Made from recycled jeans with handy pockets and zippers, they combined function and personal style as all aprons are different and fun. Or my new products come after I made some as a gift, like the PARENT AND CHILD APRON SETS. In many styles and colours and our latest are the SUPER HERO PARENT AND CHILD APRON SETS. Let your Super Hero shine, and share the love of good food and cooking. Little ones learn reading comprehension and math while having quality time together. A perfect gift for all! Did you say SUPER HERO!!! Yes, we have a wonderful collection of SUPER HERO CAPES. See how your shy little ones find the power within themselves as they put on their SUPER HERO CAPES. When we moved to beautiful Kamouraska, Quebec in 2020, I was reunited with the beautiful old hand-woven wool and catalogne blankets. The craftmanship in those beautiful blankets have inspired me to create my newest and latest products: CUSHIONS! The fun of the hunt to find those diamonds in the rough and to up-cycle them into our lifestyle has been a total JOY. Moving to London Ontario got me into making BOHO GARLANDS, a combination of beads, fabric and tassels. They are great as gifts or for redecorating your house in a new fresh look!
