Now I’m in my 30’s I feel confident in being a bit more controversial.
The mass of online courses available out there promising people that they can become expert ML engineers after 5 30minute modules online costing just £10 is damaging the field.
At best people are being miss-led. The media representation of the field has led to a huge gap in the perception of what ‘AI’ is versus the reality. Furthermore, it has led to an influx in people thinking that a job in ‘AI’ is a fast track to a successful career and financial freedom.
Finally, thanks to how some courses are being sold online, people are learning some of the skills and then believing that this will get them a high power job at a top startup or company.
I honestly believe that being self-taught can get you a great career within an AI company. However, people creating resources need to take responsibility, train people correctly and manage expectations.
When you decide to get into machine learning professionally you need to understand it is a long journey. You need to have a solid understanding of how to think logically through a problem and experimentation techniques, not just the basic coding.
You can definitely learn all of these things and be successful but these things take time to build up. You need many skills to be a machine learning engineer. Most of all you need patience.
Finally, working in research is very different to what is done in businesses. You need to decide what you really want to do.
Rant over. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
