Bed Buddies Gifts® is a home-based business that has been in operation for over 40 years. We attend many Christmas craft fairs and our products are also available through our Etsy store. We have four distinct lines of products: stuffed animals, Christmas ornaments, winter wear, and fleece-lined slippers.

After an analysis of my success—or lack of it—at craft fairs this year, I will no longer be selling at Out of Hand as it is a really high-end sale and my products do not fit that mould. I will be returning to Christmas in the Manger where I sold for years.

My first craft fair will not be until November but I am busily making grumpy bum pants. I want to have an inventory built up so I don't have to do so many during the selling season. They are the perfect thing to work on while watching hockey on TV.

I am madly crocheting snowflakes to get the ready for the Out of Hand Craft Fair next weekend at the Crystal Garden. I always look forward to this fair as it is a huge one with thousands of visitors. I hope that my crafts are what they want - you ever know what will be popular from one year to the next.

I had an amazing time at the HarbourCats game last Friday. I managed to sell a few sets of grumpy bums pants and met a lot of potential customers. I had the best location for both selling and watching the game as well. The other news is that now I have to make some more pairs as one colour sold out completely. I love selling live as I can interact with my customers.

I am putting my money where my mouth is. I am one of the sponsors at the HarbourCats game on July 22nd. I will be featuring my grumpy bum pants for babies on that evening. In case you don’t know, the HarbourCats are an amazing organization from ownership right down to the players and are having a record-breaking season. I have season tickets and enjoy spending my evenings at the ballpark watching the stars of tomorrow.

I have not been sitting idle while watching hockey and baseball. I have designed fingerless gloves that are in roughly the same pattern as the headbands and the boot toppers. I hope to sell some of them in a package I am calling "Keep Warm this Winter." Each package will have the three items in the same colour and customers will get a small discount when purchasing the package. Also the postage is less than it would be for individual items.What is really frustrating is that it is cheaper to send merchandise to the US than it is to send to Canadian addresses. There is something wrong here.

I realized today what keeps me going in the craft business. It sure is not the money, but it is so much more. I have the customer's permission to share her comments. For a bit of background, she asked if I could give her a bit of a discount as she was donating the snowflakes to a charity event. As I know a lot about charity events, I said that I would. I sent them off to her, thinking that would be the end of the question. Not so, she ordered 10 more of each colour and sent me the following message: "Helen, the snowflakes are absolutely gorgeous! I love the bead work! I am so thrilled with them and know they will look perfect on the tree!"
It is the personal interaction that is so important to me. She is also going to tell all the attendees at the charity event that I made the flakes and that could lead to more sales.

Although craft fairs are over for another year, I am still working on grumpy bum pants as I need to get inventory ready for the upcoming year. I tried a new colour combination - apricot with orange trim and it looks quite good. I will be working on a purple combination and seeing what else I can come up with. I managed to get some yarn on Boxing Day for half price so I will still make some money when I do the knitting. I don't make a whole bunch, but it gives me something to do while watching hockey and football.
