Here’s an industry statistic I’ve been tracking inside China’s used clothing export business that surprised me.

Many people believe AI has already transformed customer service.

The reality is more complicated.

Based on my observations:

📊 Average first-response time in the used clothing B2B industry: around 5 hours

📊 Strong-performing suppliers: around 2–3 hours

At first glance, that doesn’t sound too bad.

But here’s the problem:

Most of those “responses” are now generated by AI.

The buyer receives an instant reply.

The dashboard shows a fast response rate.

Everyone looks efficient.

Yet in many cases, the answer isn’t what the buyer is actually asking for.

Because used clothing is not a standardized product.

Grades, sorting standards, packaging methods, market preferences, and container composition vary from supplier to supplier.

Real business still requires real conversations.

So I tracked another metric:

Human Response Time
(The time between AI ending the conversation and a real person taking over.)

📊 Industry average: 3.7 hours

📊 Top-performing teams: 1.8 hours

Think about that.

A buyer may receive an AI reply immediately…

Then wait another 2–4 hours before speaking with an actual person.

In some cases, even the best suppliers still need several hours before a human joins the conversation.

That’s why, despite using AI tools every day, I still encourage our team to prioritize fast human responses whenever possible.

AI is excellent for improving efficiency.

But trust, understanding, and problem-solving still happen between people.

For global buyers, one of the easiest ways to identify a strong supplier isn’t just product quality.

It’s how quickly a knowledgeable human shows up when you need help.
