By the 1980s, Killarney had a name for all that was awful in mini-break getaways. But the Irish town has leaned into some brilliant green ideas – and the results are remarkable.

Located on the shores of Lough Leane and surrounded by rugged mountains and lush valleys, Killarney is one of the most beautiful spots in Ireland. It has stiff competition, however, as it is just one stop on The Wild Atlantic Way, the stunning 2,500km tourist trail tracing Ireland's west coast that takes in some of the country's most scenic landscapes.

In a summer of overtourism, a viral Oslo travel advert with nearly 20 million views is turning the tables on what travellers want.

It's hardly a traditional start to a tourism advertisement: "I wouldn't come here to be honest," says an unimpressed resident of Oslo.
The narrator, a 31-year-old man named Halfdan, then introduces viewers to Norway's capital, and complains about its lack of pretension, its easily accessible art like Edvard Munch's The Scream ("Not exactly the Mona Lisa," he notes) and its accessibility. All the while, he strolls through a tranquil cityscape with no queues, crowds or selfie-snappers in sight.

Aston Villa have signed midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton in a £50m deal.

The 22-year-old played every minute of Belgium's Euro 2024 campaign and now has the opportunity to represent Villa in the new season's Champions League.

Onana joined Everton from Lille for £33m in 2022 and made 72 appearances for the Toffees, scoring four goals.

He was linked with a move to Arsenal in 2023, and a host of top clubs were reportedly keen this summer.

Villa boss Unai Emery had been in the market for a new defensive midfielder after the club sold Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35m in June.

Lando Norris still has hopes of challenging Max Verstappen for the Formula 1 title this year despite losing out to the Red Bull driver in a grand prix he felt he should have won for a second consecutive time.

The McLaren driver crossed the line at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix just two seconds behind the world champion.

The rueful agony on his face afterwards reflected the reality that, as Norris himself put it: "I should have done better today."

Briton Ben Whittaker grabbed Ezra Arenyeka by the throat after being goaded at the weigh-in for Saturday's light-heavyweight contest in London.

The Olympic silver medallist retaliated after Arenyeka pointed his finger towards Whittaker’s face in the head-to-head.

As security intervened, Arenyeka then threw women's underwear at Whittaker.

"At the end of the day, he's coming with his energy," a dumbfounded Whittaker, 27, said.

"It's all nervous energy. Tomorrow's the day. Tomorrow's judgement day."

Lowry said he was not sure why he had persevered with art as a young man, but had felt driven to continue.
"I don’t know what kept me on painting," he said.
"Something did. I don’t know what it was. And I kept on, you see."

A wildlife charity has urged gardeners not to plant rhododendrons.
The Woodland Trust said the invasive plant could carry a disease that could be fatal to more than 150 species.
The Lincolnshire-based charity has called on the government to introduce stricter measures to stop the plant being imported.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said it was already illegal to plant rhododendrons in the wild and funding was being provided to control them.
The trust said it had spent £360,000 on removing invasive plants over the past year.
Rebecca Gosling, an expert in tree disease at the trust, said invasive species had placed pressure on wildlife populations.

Actress Cate Blanchett has become an ambassador for a nature reserve in West Sussex.

Kew's botanic gardens at Wakehurst, near Haywards Heath, made the announcement on Monday to coincide with Earth Day

The site is home to Kew's Millennium Seed Bank, believed to be the world's largest store of seeds from wild plant species.

In a statement via Wakehurst, Blanchett said she was "delighted" to be it's inaugural ambassador.

The Australian-born actress and film producer, described as a "regular visitor" to the gardens, continued: "I find the work done here to be utterly inspiring, and a genuine insurance policy against extinction of wild flora and fauna.

"Wakehurst is such a beautiful place to lose yourself in nature, in the immense varieties of trees, plants and grasses.

"I want to help spread the word about this unique and stunning landscape that positively impacts all of our lives.”

The site is home to a mixture of formal gardens, wild meadows, woodlands and wetlands spanning 535 acres (216.5 hectares).

A grey squirrel which may have ridden a train to the home of Wales' largest red squirrel population has been captured, following fears it could have killed off the local species.

The animal was spotted by a member of the public on Anglesey in mid-February who reported it to Red Squirrels Trust Wales after weeks on the loose.

Dr Craig Shuttleworth said the greys had found a number of "Mission Impossible"-style ways of getting to the island - with one even spotted swimming across the Menai Strait.

He spent weeks trying to track down the creature, setting up wildlife cameras and traps.

Experts share how to best view the bloom – without causing another 'poppy apocalypse'.

Following a wetter-than-average winter, California's deserts are starting to erupt in wildflower blooms, a palette of colours brightening the normally sandy-brown landscape.
"I'm swimming in an abundance of wildflowers here," says Danny McCamish, senior environmental scientist at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in eastern San Diego County, California.
There, bright purple sand-verbena, yellow desert sunflowers and creamy white dune evening primrose blanket swathes of the park.
"We're experiencing a pretty impressive display of wildflowers. There are certain areas where we have field-covering carpets of wildflowers, which are really stunning," McCamish says.

A once-rare type of dragonfly may have been aided by climate change, the Broads Authority has said.

The Norfolk Hawker went extinct from the Cambridgeshire Fens in 1893 and, prior to 2013, its breeding sites were in the east of Norfolk and Suffolk.

As average temperatures have risen, it has expanded beyond its former limits.

Sightings and egg-laying have been recorded in Lancashire, South Devon, Dorset and Sussex by the British Dragonfly Society.

Since 1990, the initial spread in East Anglia was westwards from the Broads and southwards along the coastal marshes of Suffolk.

The population that grew around the southern edge of Norwich was helped by water quality improvements and habitat creation in areas of former gravel pits, such as at Whitlingham Broad.

The recent colonisation of Norfolk hawker in counties beyond Norfolk and Suffolk was most likely due to climate change, with habitat changes also playing a significant role, the Broads Authority said.
