BEESWAX TO MANAGE EMOTIONS, WELL-BEING AND SLEEP
The smell of beeswax is a therapeutic, comforting scent that promotes a positive, relaxed mental state by engaging the brain's emotional and memory centers.
Beeswax is recognized as an ambient fragrance that contributes to feelings of comfort, safety, and emotional well-being.
Our sense of smell (olfactory) is unique among the senses. Evolutionarily, it is the oldest. And in the womb, it’s one of the first to develop.
In the brain, smell stands apart because it’s the only sense that doesn’t pass through the thalamus—the brain’s “sorting station.” Instead, scent signals go straight from the nose to the olfactory bulb, which is located within the brain and is directly connected to the limbic system—the emotional center of the brain.
This is why we often react to a smell before we’re consciously aware of it. Because of this direct link, scents can powerfully trigger emotions, memories, and even behaviours, such as food aversions or fear responses.
• Mood Elevation: Research indicates that the scent of candles/beeswax is specifically associated with feelings of happiness.
• Stress Reduction: Natural odors, including beeswax, are frequently used to evoke positive memories, which can increase feelings of comfort and reduce anxiety.
• "Ethereal" Classification: Historical, yet foundational, research classified the odor of beeswax as "Ethereal," a category often associated with pleasant, light, and natural atmospheres.
• Sleep and Relaxation: While beeswax candles do not induce sleep, their use can lower blood pressure and stress, helping the body enter a state of relaxation. Their warm candlelight, shining on the yellow light scale, further signals the brain to produce melatonin.
