Attention! The countdown begins 🌏
On June 5 we celebrated World Environment Day and, according to the UN, we have 10 years ahead of us to restore and reverse the loss of nature, a vital challenge to conserve biodiversity and ensure our health and future.
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, we have transformed three-quarters of the earth's surface, caused the loss of more than 85% of wetlands and polluted most of the coasts, seas and oceans. We have produced a planetary change of such dimensions that, considering the growth of the world population, conserving what we have left will no longer be enough to survive.
It is urgent to heal the wounds of the planet with an ecological restoration that is much more than planting trees or collecting waste. We must help nature to regenerate itself in an integral way, recovering healthy ecosystems that harbor biodiversity and return to offer vital resources and services for society.
The stakes are high and we are losing too much. Every minute an area of forest equivalent to 20 football fields is destroyed and, if the trend is not reversed, in the next 30 years we will lose 90% of the coral reefs, which would mean a terrible catastrophe and the ruin and death of millions of people.
