Hot take: coats are just socially acceptable blankets

Coats are one of those sewing projects that you can actually save money on by making it yourself. A nice wool coat can be $$$. Even after factoring in the cost of fabric and a pattern, it’s cheaper to make my own than to buy one. Plus I got to pick the color.

This is the Yokohama coat by which you’ve probably seen me post a bunch if you’ve been around for awhile.

I’m feeling inspired and ready for 2024!

I’ve heard it helps to pick a guiding word at the beginning of the year to help orientate yourself toward your goals.

This year I’ve chosen the word GROW.

I want to grow…

🌱 My partern making and pattern grading skills

🌱 The Genuinely Em sewing pattern collection

🌱 My technical sewing repertoire

🌱 Real and virtual sewing connections 🤝

Do you have any sewing goals or a guiding word for 2024?

I was inspired by and her guiding word post.

The Maple 🍁 Dress is available NOW thanks to all of my amazing testers and their feedback!

Maple is not only cute but functional. I designed the pattern so that the square neck was bra-friendly for my ladies with 🍈🍈 iykyk.

I made sure the waist and hips had a little ease so that the dress isn’t clingy. It’s super comfy, some might even say secret PJs 😉

The pattern comes with 2 sleeve options. One straight sleeve and one subtle bell sleeve. Plus you can easily hack the dress into a top by using the lining pattern pieces.

Grab the pattern on my website and my Etsy shop.

Mitchell Trousers View B Recap

I took my jacket off just to take these pics.

I LOVE these pants and keep on wearing them, which is always the true test of how much I like a pattern. ❤️

I made these for last month’s Sew Club. I was super thankful to have such a supportive group helping each other make these trousers!

The sewing is not so difficult but there are some technical steps that require some focus like the welt pockets and front fly zipper.

I found a super helpful sew-a-long video from that really helped me nail the fly front zipper on my first try.

I made a straight size 10. My body measurements put me more in the 12 range but I cross-checked with the final garment measurements and decided to make the smaller size. For reference, my waist is 29-30” and hips 40”. I’m super happy with the fit and actually it’s a little loose at the waist but those fun waist ties make it fit perfectly!

If you’d like to join Sew Club you can find the link to the group in my bio. We have some fun patterns lined up for next month!

The cult favorite Zadie jumpsuit, my honest review…

Last month was the first month of my new sewing club and we chose to make the Zadie from Paper Theory. Honestly, I hadn’t really thought of making it before but I’m always down to try new patterns and learn new techniques.

Quick review: I’d make it again, but only as a top.

Long review: I decided to make a size 12. My measurements are bust - 38” waist - 30” hips - 40”
I should’ve followed the advice of others who already made this pattern and sized down by at least one size maybe even two.

This pattern includes a lot of ease. That’s nice for making a garment comfy but not my fit preference. The top fits well but the bottom half ended up a bit saggy.

Pattern adjustments: I made a toile prior to making my linen version. Based on the mock-up I reduced the bodice length by 1” and raised the rise by 1”. I also took in the side seams by at least an 1” at the waist and blended it back into the side seam. I ended up making this change after sewing my linen version so that’s why I’m not exactly sure how much I took in.

What I’d do different next time: I’d cut my pants at a smaller size. I’d also raise the crotch higher because it sits pretty low. On my short legs it looks a bit disproportionate. I’m happy with how the top fits and wouldn’t change it.

What this pattern does well: The instructions are well written and clear. I love how the wrap top doesn’t gape and fits comfortably.

Will I make another one? I don’t think I’ll make the jumpsuit again but I’d like to make a wrap top with this pattern.

Have you made the Zadie? What did you think?

If you’ve been around for a minute you probably know I released a beginner sewing course last month. I poured my heart into it and I’m so proud of it! But maybe you’re not so convinced yet.

Here are some questions I’ve received and wanted to answer them for you.

Learning to sew has been the greatest gift for me. It’s expanded my creativity, let me start my own business, and taught me how to be more patient and enjoy the process of making.

This course is for anyone who wants to jumpstart their sewing journey and begin sewing asap. There are tons of ways you can learn to sew from free online resources to in-person classes. A lot of my sewing knowledge comes from a sewing class I took every Friday afternoon while I was in high school. But not everyone has access to a physical sewing class and sometimes it can be overwhelming to learn a new skill without guidance. That’s why I made this course.

And one of the coolest parts of the course is that it’s available to you FOREVER including any updates. For example, this week I’m adding a 2nd final project to the course that everyone part of the course will have access to.

Thanks for sewing with me 🫶!

French toast, fabric shopping, and a flat white. What do they all have to do with each other besides starting with the same letter? Nothing much, they’re just some of my favorite things 💕

I picked up fabric for my jumpsuit that I’m sewing for the first ever Sew Club project. You can join the group by following the link in my bio 😉

I am in LOVE with this dress pattern and wear my Florence dress all the time. I can’t wait for Friday 😁

Pause 2 seconds I wanna tell you something fun! My fav little skirt is available on my website for literally any price you want to pay. You can get Maeve for ✨free✨or you can pay the price you want.

I’m testing out this way of sharing my patterns. I know sometimes sewing patterns and be pricey and keep people from sewing.

So if you’re interested in this skirt, this is your time to grab it! ‘Cause soon Maeve will go back to her regular price 🫶

Happy sewing!
