MAKER SPOTLIGHT: The Story Behind Every Scent: Aerangis🌸

We're absolutely smitten with Alicia Tsai's story.

THE ORIGIN:
A nine-year-old girl spending afternoons in her grandfather's greenhouse, learning to care for dozens of rare orchids. He gave her an aerangis orchid—with star-shaped flowers that release the most beautiful scent every evening during bloom. Fresh, delicate, soft.

That scent became forever linked with those cherished moments at his side.

THE JOURNEY:
Alicia studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, worked with New York's finest fragrance minds, and founded Aerangis (Air-ANG-giss)—not just to bottle her own memories, but to help all of us tell our stories through scent.

WHY WE LOVE THEM:
→ AAPI-owned and proud
→ Women-led business
→ Every fragrance has a story
→ Luxury that's conscious and meaningful
→ Made with intention, not just profit

This is exactly the kind of brand we built Brix + Bailey for. Where every purchase connects you to a real person, a real story, and real values.

The story nobody tells you about starting a creative business...

Year 1: Everything is exciting. Every sale feels like a miracle.

Year 3-7: You're still here, but barely. You've proven people want what you make. But you're drowning in operations you never trained for.

This is where most creative businesses die. Not from lack of talent. From lack of infrastructure.

This is why we built Brix + Bailey.

A marketplace designed for the makers in the middle. The ones too big for DIY, too small for enterprise solutions. The ones doing remarkable work and deserving better support.

Are you in the middle right now? What's the one thing nobody warned you about?

The Middle Is Where Creative Businesses Go to Die: Real Conversations With Makers Who Are Barely Surviving

There’s a moment in every founder’s journey that doesn’t make it to Instagram.
t usually happens around year four or five. Your products are selling. People love what you make. You’ve built a loyal following. From the outside, it looks like you’ve “made it.”

But inside? You’re drowning.
Welcome to the middle. This is where most creative businesses die.

The Conversations We’re Having?
For the past two months, we’ve been talking to independent makers as we build Brix + Bailey, a marketplace and crowdfunding platform designed specifically for small-batch creators. Ceramicists. Jewelers. Furniture makers. Textile artists. Woodworkers. Leather workers. Different products. Different aesthetics. Different markets.

What We’re Building?
This is why Brix + Bailey exists.

We started these conversations because we were building a platform and wanted to understand what makers actually needed. What we found was a pattern of pain so consistent, so urgent, that it changed how we’re approaching everything.

We’re not just building another marketplace. We’re building the infrastructure for makers in the middle.

A platform that combines:

Curated marketplace for selling without inventory risk
Integrated crowdfunding for strategic growth capital
Operational tools built for small-batch businesses
Community of makers supporting makers
Not built for corporations and scaled down. Built from the ground up for the creative businesses most likely to fail between years 3–7.

Because the middle doesn’t have to be where dreams die. It can be where they grow strong enough to last.

Stories Win, Jargon Loses.
The word "sustainability" makes people switch off. It signals higher prices, moral obligation, and guilt. But fashion has always been about emotion, desire, and connection.

We've found that when you tell the story of how a bag was made, who made it, what inspired the design, and why the materials matter – people lean in. They want to be part of something meaningful, not lectured about what they should do.

Our approach: Every maker on our platform has a story. We share the journey, the craft, the inspiration. When customers fall in love with the story, they naturally embrace the values. Sustainability becomes part of the allure, not a burden to bear.

Running a family business is equal parts heart, humour, and holding your nerve. Three generations in, we’ve learned a thing or two — mostly the hard way.

Here’s what the journey taught us about patience, pride, and the occasional spreadsheet:

PS: If you’ve ever worked with family, tell us your best (or worst) lesson in the comments. We’ll trade stories.

Three generations, countless cups of tea, and more lessons than any business degree could ever offer.

A Fashion rockstar. Yep.

Yes, that is tweed on ice. Proof, if ever it were needed, that fashion and fun can (occasionally) skate together.

At Brix + Bailey we’ve always believed in the unordinary — and frankly, this feels very much on brand. Kudos to Navy or Grey for the bespoke and fabulous suit!

Independent brands.....come and join in the fun!

What started as a lookbook with hand-drawn illustrations has grown into something bigger. We’ve moved those sketches into film, and now into a marketplace — a home for independent brands, emerging designers, and unordinary collections.

Brix + Bailey began with bags and accessories, and today we’re building a space where creativity, conscious design, and independence meet.

Unordinary design. Independent spirit. We hope you’ll love what we’re creating.

At Brix + Bailey, we’ve never played by the rules. Our original lookbook shoot has been reimagined with hand-drawn illustrations, now animated into film. Unexpected, playful, and unapologetically us.
