Honestly the timing could not have been better!

We have had air conditioning fitted in our home office building for two years now and it was the best investment we made. So last week we had the lovely Meridian Air Conditioning team back to add a unit to our lounge. ❄️❄️

This isn’t an AD - but I wanted to shout out the company as everyone who comes to an appointment with me benefits from the system they set up and they really did take great care of our house while getting it done.

Did you know that when you come to me you benefit from an air conditioned space so you don’t need to worry about getting hot and bothered while giving things a try ❤️

Babies facing outwards makes for great photos and is often the default that you see on Instagram, TV and in movies - but that doesn’t mean it should be the default carry for you!

Always remember that babies should not forward face too early - and realistically it starts to feel heavy and uncomfortable around the 10/12month mark… so in general I advise learning to hip carry or back carry instead. (Both of those are also cooler options!)

Out and about I see this done in an unsafe way all the time, so share with your friends to keep everyone safe and comfy ❤️

Have you ever tried an outward facing carrier?

Looking to give it a go? Choose a carrier like the Ergo Omni Dream/360 or Tula Explore that offers a bucket style seat to give a supportive position for hips.

This afternoon I’ve started playing with the .berlin carrier that I have on loan and I’m very impressed with how small it folds!

It is comparable in size to the Izmi baby… and can fold a tiny bit flatter too!

I’m going to be testing this out lots more in the next couple of weeks, so let me know what questions you have about it.

Fancy giving it a try? Come to an event in the next month and give it a go for free ❤️

This week I picked up a new hip carrier for the library after being asked about it in a consultation. (Always ask if I don’t have something you want to try!).

So here is a quick summary for you!

🔷Carry assist - it gives more support than carrying in arms but is not fully supportive
🔷Organic cotton, wonderfully soft
🔷Toggle at the top and bottom to pull in the seams to help make it feel more secure
🔷Suitable from around 6 months when baby can sit unaided
🔷Weight tested to 20kg
🔷Spreadable shoulder for comfort

So many features that I love!

A couple of things to be aware of:
🔷 You have to adjust the back to the right size before you put it on, but you’ll only need to do this the first time you use it.
🔷The cotton fabric slips a few millimetres or so when you tighten it - webbing is slightly less likely to do this… but the cotton fabric does look a lot better aesthetically.

How does it compare to the Neko Up & Down?
They both have a large pouch for baby to sit in and a way of adjusting its size at the top, which is fab.
But they feel quite different because of the shoulder and back adjustment.

(The Neko has the same adjuster on the front and back that you can tighten while wearing if needed and has a padded shoulder).

I would definitely recommend trying both to see which you prefer. Or go fully supportive with a mini monkey or ring sling!

Honestly back carrying just never felt like my thing.

For me babywearing hasn’t just been about having free hands, getting more done, enjoying snuggles while not being nap trapped…

It’s been about conversations. Kisses. Seeing her smile and take in the world.

So when she could sit up and back carrying became an option I just thought, maybe next month… and kept going with front carrying and hip carrying with my ring sling and Sleepy Nico.

Now don’t get me wrong - front carrying and hip carrying has many limitations.

Washing up is not easy with a wriggly 8 months old old on your front or hip 😂

Still I stuck to it. And now at 2 years old it’s still my main way of carrying, mainly out of habit and the stubborn nature of a 2 year old who doesn’t like change.

But… every time I do back carry (every couple of weeks) I’m reminded of how much more comfortable it is on my body. Particularly now she is heavier. And how much easier it is to have a conversation with my husband!

So my recommendation is this: don’t feel pressured to give it a go, but equally know that if your feeling that a front carry is getting heavy for you, then you might find back carrying helps. And learning to back carry doesn’t mean you need to always do back carrying!

How old was your little one when you learnt to back carry them?

Top tip today is a method of getting your little one out of a back carry ❤️

Your flexibility and reach and babies stage of development will impact how you get them out of a back carry and might also impact what type of carrier you prefer to use for one. Reach out for personalised support aimed at your circumstances.

Personally my favourite way to move out of a back carry is to remove the carrier from the equation and move them round without it around them.

This means supporting baby while you remove the carrier straps and lower the panel until you are just holding them against you with your hands.

The reason I love doing it this way is because you can practice moving back to and from your back with this method without a carrier involved at any stage - so when you do add one you are already confident with the motions.

Another bonus? During our swimming lessons we have been asked to do a similar motion and were already confident!

Ever heard of a sling library? It’s the perfect place to get support with a baby carrier or to find out more about babywearing safely with a trained consultant.

On the 3rd Friday of each month you’ll find me over in New Milton for my monthly sling library event 🎉

This event is perfect if you want to browse through some carriers before hiring/buying, or if you want some support with your own or to help pick something to try.

Remember sling libraries carry all sorts of options - buckle carriers, hip carriers, ring slings, stretchy wraps… the list goes on!

And unlike most large retailers I have had training to be able to support you and your baby to help get a safe and comfortable fit. (Without bias towards certain brands that might happen in stores).

If you would like slower paced or in depth support, such as trying multiple options or a newborn consultation then book a 1-2-1 for the first hour instead. Or look at the slots available over in Bearwood.

Has anyone noticed that there isn’t actually that much time to chat to other mums during baby classes?

Snugglebugs Mums art group give you the chance to have a chat, play with some creative ideas (full step by step given if you want help!) and take a moment for you.

Come with or without your little one. Babies and toddlers are very welcome ❤️
