Well, it’s September and officially the start of autumn—so it’s time for some cosy Nipper! 🍂🧥

Thank you to Shelley Chell for inspiring this week’s post. ❤️

“What goes around comes around…”

From our 1992 Nipper catalogue: our wonderfully cosy, rainproof padded jacket, made in two colourways ❤️💙 and modelled here by Shelley’s gorgeous twins.

And now, more than 30 years later, Boden has a very similar look! 😊

Just like Dolly Parton’s RIP what a legend 🤩 iconic “Coat of Many Colors,” this Nipper jacket celebrates the charm of colourful tartan, timeless design and cosy autumn style. ❤️💙

TO BE WORN AGAIN — some 42 years later 💛

Photo Circa 1983. Max, about four years old, wearing an early pair of Nipper shorts with braces. There’s no catalogue reference for this particular pair — just a family photograph and the garment itself.

The style continued. This striped version appeared in the Nipper collection 1992

Having survived — the elastic tired, but the fabric still crisp and very much wearable. A little repair, some new elastic and they’re ready for another small boy.

This time my beautiful grandson Isaac, shorts teamed here with a cut down 2nd generation Nipper T-shirt - a design created around the Nipper bricks - Alphabet - now worn by another generation.

This is exactly what TO BE WORN AGAIN means.

Our clothes weren’t designed to be disposable. They were made to be worn, loved, handed down, repaired — and sometimes rediscovered more than forty years later. 💛💙

STYLE BIBLE • STYLE 01 💙💛

The quintessential Nipper style — Baby Baggies.

Style 01 began right at the start of Nipper: roomy, practical trousers with an elasticated waist, adjustable braces and plenty of freedom for little bodies to move and grow.

The classic version was denim early versions seen here from 1981, 1988, they became one of those deceptively simple designs that just worked.

And the story carried on…

An original 1999 archive pair survives complete with its swing ticket and production pattern. In 2019 another vintage pair was back being worn by a new generation — and in 2026, here they are again on my grandson Isaac. 💙💛

More than 45 years after Style 01 first appeared, the Baby Baggies are still doing exactly what they were designed to do:

to be worn, handed down — and worn again.

📖 STYLE 01 now added to the Nipper Legacy Collection Style Bible.

FROM THE NIPPER STYLE BIBLE 💛💙

One dress. Two seasons.

Style 178 first appeared in our Autumn/Winter 1995/96 collection — a soft, full-bodied dress with its distinctive knotted scarf collar.

For Spring/Summer 1996 we didn’t abandon the idea. We developed it.

Style 202 took the same underlying design into summer, changing the fabric and feel while keeping the details that gave the dress its character.

Whilst I’m just starting this Style Bible, I’m beginning to see not just individual garments, but the threads that ran from one Nipper collection into the next.

Style 178 — A/W 1995/96
Style 202 — S/S 1996

Both are now documented in the Nipper Legacy Collection Style Bible.

Spring/Summer 1989 ☀️

Our Spring/Summer 1989 catalogue was the second Nipper catalogue to feature photography throughout, with every image photographed on location in Brighton & Hove.

This collection also reflected the growing popularity of Aertex, with five different colourways featured that season.

The boys on the front cover are my eldest son, Max, and Julia’s eldest son, Jack. Max has a very special place in Nipper’s history because he was the inspiration behind the company itself. Nipper began when I started making clothes for my baby boy. That simple idea grew into a children’s clothing company that dressed thousands of children.

Sharing the cover is Blossom, Julia’s sister’s Bull Terrier, who was just as much a part of the photoshoot as the children. She certainly knew how to steal the limelight! 🐶

Featured on the cover are:
• Style 14 – Shirt
• Style 10 – Trews Trousers
• Style 52 – Bermuda Shorts
• Style 45 – Unstructured Jacket, inspired by the classic French worker’s jacket
• Style 79 – Waistcoat

It’s especially heartwarming to see many of these garments now being worn by a second generation, more than 30 years later.

Yesterday I phoned into BBC Radio Kent’s discussion about AI with Anna Cookson. 😊

Much of the conversation centred on concerns about AI, so I wanted to share a different perspective.

At 78, I’ve been using ChatGPT as a creative assistant to help preserve the history of Nipper, the children’s clothing company I founded with Julia Scoging over 45 years ago.

With ChatGPT’s help, I’ve built the Nipper Legacy Collection website, organised hundreds of archive photographs and catalogues, documented the stories behind the collections, and made decades of British children’s fashion accessible for future generations.

I honestly couldn’t have done this without ChatGPT patiently guiding me through the whole process.

The two images show just a small part of what has been created.

Thank you to BBC Radio Kent for allowing me to share a short clip from yesterday’s programme. I hope it shows that, when used thoughtfully, AI can be a powerful tool for preserving history rather than replacing creativity.

💙 The ideas, memories and history are mine. ChatGPT simply helped me bring them together.

The programme is available on BBC Sounds:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0f1c898

🎙️ My contribution begins at approximately 1 hour 12 minutes 40 seconds and lasts around 5 minutes.

If anyone would like to hear my contribution to the discussion, just send me a message and I’ll happily share the recording I’ve made 😊.
