Day 1 "Cloth is complicated!"
Hooray! It’s here. Welcome to the first discussion of our Reusable Nappy Week 2021.
One of the big things that puts people off trying reusables is how complicated it all seems.
Many people still imagine those old squares of fabric, folded in complicated ET style “infinite cosmic computations”, fastened with safety pins, and hours of scrubbing and rinsing and even BOILING them on the hob in a cauldron with a massive wooden spoon, “Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble with stains…..” Yes?
Though a simple flat square of absorbent fabric is STILL the most economical, adaptable, truly birth to potty, reliable and EASY to use system we have to this day - there have been a lot of other changes since then. Terry squares were originally made of cotton, which was perfect for the job. Fairly quick to absorb, a decent capacity, and capable of taking a good deal of hot washing and agitation. With many people not having an automatic washing machine, you can understand why this back-breaking experience is ingrained in our memory.
But with time, come advances in technology and transport that enable us to improve. You can now get them in other fabrics such as bamboo, which has a massive capacity several times that of cotton, but can struggle with speed; and h**p, which is usually a blend with another material, has a capacity comparable to bamboo but can have a similar speed to cotton depending on the exact mix.
Our flats are a blend of H**p and Organic cotton. These materials are chosen for their eco-credentials, which we’ll share in another post. Overall, the greater the ratio of h**p to cotton; the lower the environmental impact. Our products contain 55% h**p and 45% organic cotton, which is the highest ratio found in fabrics suitable for nappy use, used by just a few brands.
So how are Wee Impees flats NOT complicated? Because we’ve done all the hard stuff for you, creating a simple product that has a great capacity and decent speed, with lots of ways to use them even to enhance other brands you already have. You can just get on with it, which is as simple as it gets.
