August was a bit of an experiment for me...
I challenged myself to post every single day for the whole month to see what would happen. Would more people see my handmade children's clothing? Would engagement increase? Would sales follow?
The results were... interesting!
Things I learned:
🩳 Reach increased noticeably.
🩳 More people saw my posts.
🩳 Sales stayed very quiet.
🩳 Likes, comments and messages didn't really increase much.
So now I'm left wondering what the takeaway is.
Was it because August is peak summer holiday season and everyone's busy making memories rather than shopping?
Was it because people are feeling the squeeze financially?
Was it because social media is changing again?
Or was it simply that posting more gets your content seen, but doesn't automatically turn viewers into customers?
We also ran offers and promotions throughout the month, and while they were seen by more people than usual, they didn't generate the response I'd hoped for.
I won't pretend it isn't a little demoralising. Running a small handmade business means putting a lot of time, effort and heart into creating products and content, and it's hard when the numbers don't reflect that effort.
So September's big question is...
🩳 Do I keep posting every day?
🩳 Do I post less and focus on quality over quantity?
🩳 Do I spend more time making and less time on social media?
🩳 Do I throw my phone into a hedge and become a mysterious fabric-dwelling woodland creature?
(That last option is currently scoring surprisingly well)
For now, I'm choosing to see August as useful information rather than a failure. I learned that consistency can improve visibility, but visibility alone isn't the whole story.
If you're a fellow small business owner, I'd genuinely love to know what's working for you right now?
And if you're one of the lovely people who follows along, what sort of posts do you actually enjoy seeing from small businesses?
Thank you for sticking around while I figure it all out.
There's one last summer special coming tomorrow, and HBE 6th birthday coming up at the end of September....but if I choose option 4 above that may not happen 🙈
