Thought I’d have a go at making one or two face masks for a friend who works in hospital... they can be hot washed, are reversible and could have a ‘filter’ inserted if available 🧵✂️☺️

🌈Rainbow cushion 🌈

Templates - can be enlarged to make a bigger version 😊

I’ve been thinking of different ideas for adding colour by using patchwork, appliqué, fabric paint or ribbons... but essentially adding stripes in 6 or 7 colours in some way to the rainbow, then overlaying with the Clouds☁️.
Watch this space 😉✂️🧵

Making the cushion:
Cut out background fabric 43cm x 43cm
Use paper template of the rainbow 🌈 to cut out the whole shape in RED fabric (adding 5mm hem allowance along the top edge if the fabric frays)
Pin in place on the background fabric (folding under the hem if there is one)
Prepare the second colour arc - pin in place
Repeat with all the other colours.

(You could sew on each colour one at a time - I pinned them all first before sewing them on)

Depending on what fabric you use will depend on if you need to add hems to turn under or not if sewing by hand.
(If machine sewing with zigzag stitch, you won’t need to add hem allowance)

Add clouds ☁️ at the end to cover the ends of the rainbow

Insert a zip along one side of the cushion or make two backs the overlap by 1/3 cushion width for an envelope style back.

Making up the main bag :

Start by marking on the wrong side of the fabric the ‘casing’ or ‘channel’ where the cord will pull through. (I did mine too small and had to add a facing 🤦🏼‍♀️)- should be 6cm from top edge where you leave a 2cm gap in the stitching at the sides of the bag.

Machine both side seams, iron (press) open then put a snip just below the gap left for the casing, and overlock or zigzag stitch the seam allowance together.

Next, stitch the seam allowances around the casing opening to keep them flat. This helps when threading the cord through.

Next you will add the strap and the loop to the top edge of the back of the bag - the straps should be 13cm apart, and the loop goes in between them.

Add the flap over the top of the straps and loop, and stitch to hold in place.

Straps:
Fold the straps down the middle with right sides facing. Pin and tack the straps along the long edges. Machine stitch with 1cm seam allowance.
Turn straps the right way out and iron. Top-stitch 0.5cm down each long edge.

Do the same with the Loop.

Flap:
Pin and tack the two flap pieces together with right sides facing. Machine stitch the curved edge only. ‘Clip’ the curves with small snips.
Turn out the right way, and iron flat. Top-stitch around the curved edge 0.5cm from the edge.

Cutting out all pieces carefully - remember to check you have got 1 front, 1 back, 2 flaps, 2 straps, 1 loop and 1 base.

I am going to make one of these Small Backpacks and add my step-by-step photos on here 😊

1) Draw up the pattern pieces to the measurements in the picture. Where 2 pieces are needed, you only need to make 1 pattern piece, and move it on the fabric, or cut out on a fold.

You will need medium weight fabric without stretch, fabric scissors and thread scissors ✂️ , pins , thread 🧵 and a sewing machine.

The second image shows how to curve the corners for the flap sections.

Enjoy! 😊
