For months, I followed everybody’s ᴀᴅᴠɪᴄᴇ but it took me ɴᴏᴡʜᴇʀᴇ…

The road I took was long, winding (and tough!) but ꧁ this need not be the same for you. ꧂

I used to send my job applications 𝔼ℕ𝔻𝕃𝔼𝕊𝕊𝕃𝕐 and was hardly get any feedback. This lasted months and months…

😓 This keep me awake at night. I was haunted by: what is my future going to be like if I don’t get a job?

I did not know what to do anymore. I spent my time tweaking and tweaking my portfolio for months. Spent a fortune at the photocopy shop!

Not even talking about the cost of living in Paris! I was working part-time at Mulberry store in Paris. Retail was not my cup of tea at all 🥱

I felt so un-aligned with my life at that time.

One day, I realised that maybe the blockage was somewhere else.

Then I ᴅᴇᴄɪᴅᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ᴄʜᴀɴɢᴇ ᴍʏ sᴛʀᴀᴛᴇɢʏ. 💥
As I would often say: old ways won’t open new doors.
Then I began to notice minor changes. 🌤

I tried so many different strategies in hopes of finding the right one… and in the end I got there! It was a long and painful ride.
It was not the best of times, the Dotcom Bubble burst and 9/11 happened.

🤓 I want to reassure you that it is very possible to find an internship or a job in fashion right now. Collections still need to be created.
✨ Extra help is even necessary as everything takes longer but the schedule remains the same.

Credit to that inspired me with this amazing hairstyle

Any idea what was the best advice I received when I was at university?⁣

My course director, with slight annoyance, told me: “Claire, you got to stop saying “but” to everything I say!”⁣

You should have seen the look on my face… I was like “but…” in my head 🤣🤣🤣 and yeah… probably blushing like crazy…⁣

After that I made a point to notice when I would say “yes! But!” every time I received advice from my teachers… I suspect that me unconsciously trying to justify myself to them.⁣

So what’s the point of paying for (expensive!) education when you’re not going to heed your teachers advice? ⁣

I then realised that I was the one responsible for feeling stuck when I was working on my final collection. I realised that I was holding myself back.⁣

I taught myself to stop with saying “but!” to everything.⁣

It was hard.⁣

Ingrained habits are difficult to be removed.⁣

I knew it was coming from not having enough self-confidence. ⁣

Then one day the director of IFM (Institut Francais de la Mode) said to me: “Claire, your fingers are gold.” ⁣

Wow 😮 ⁣

It took time for that to sink in. And when it did sink in, it sank deeply and resonated within me.⁣

I can tell that having someone you truly admire say something like that really boosted my self confidence. And those amazing words do return whenever I felt doubt during my job hunt. ⁣

From that day onwards I trusted myself. I trusted myself for I know deep down within me that like that IFM director told me - I do have ‘fingers of gold’. I became a new me.⁣

As a coach and mentor, I would often think back to what my director said to me.⁣

I know that there is very little else that is more important and meaningful than having the right words said. Words that will resonate deep within us.⁣

Have you ᴇᴠᴇʀ ғᴇʟᴛ this way too?

I felt overwhelmed by all the choices I had after graduating.
👉 Should I apply for small brands or big brands?
👉 Do I even get a chance if I apply for a big brand or am I losing my time? Should I work in a fashion house?
👉 Am I even ready to move to a different country? Should I work in trends to understand 'what is a design that makes money'?
👉 Should I work for a supplier for a fashion house to learn more about the technical side of things?
👉 Should I work for a magazine? Should I create my own brand?
👉 I don’t know anything about business so isn’t it a bit risky?

👉 Should I look for an employee job or go freelance?

So many other questions!
The funny part is I thought to try my luck for all of those places to see what would work. I was expecting someone else to choose for me. I was not in the driving seat. I let other people decide for me because I was confused. I had no strategy other than throwing spaghetti at the wall and see if one sticks.
Why did I do that? Because a confused mind doesn’t choose.

I wasted a year before finding the right strategy that matched my dreams, but by eventually gaining clarity allowed me to get my 𝔻ℝ𝔼𝔸𝕄 𝕁𝕆𝔹.

Life is a journey and that’s the beauty of it. I can feel the meaning of it more deeply today than 20 years ago.

This summer I had an interview with a journalist; she asked me what was the journey that brought me to do coaching? It seems like a really simple question but it really made me think about my path.

First I thought: What is the link between coaching and being a designer? Both require creativity, great attention to details, great skills of adaption, resilience and the list could go on.

But I realised that the common thread was… the ᴛʀᴇᴀsᴜʀᴇ ʜᴜɴᴛ!
Yes, the treasure hunt, as odd as it may sounds.

Let me explain.

I’ve always had a passion for Tᖇᗴᗩᔕᑌᖇᗴ ᕼᑌᑎT. From my love of making collections when I was a child… to doing inspiration research for Louis Vuitton after graduating from college.

My life revolved around treasure hunting for ideas in fleas markets and on my travels, looking for rare images in old libraries… to creating new portfolio of ideas each season for LV Studio. If this is not treasure hunting then what is it? 😉

So what about coaching?
For me, it’s all about treasure hunt too because I see each client as the creator of a treasure box ❣️
I love to dive into their world to understand their portfolio. ꧁ A portfolio is like a treasure box ꧂

And my job is to spot the best pieces among their treasure box and to help my clients to present them at their best.

It’s all visual of course but it’s also key how they can build an emotional bridge with their interviewer.

Visualise this: The treasure at one end of the rainbow (their portfolio) and on the other end of the rainbow, the company of their dream.

✨ That is the ᗰᗩᘜIᑕᗩᒪ ᖇᗴᑕIᑭᗴ for being asked to create more treasures for the company of their dreams ✨

I believe every designer has a true passion for something that the world needs and that it’s just a matter of being able to present it to the right person. That when the magic happens!

Are you ready for this?

What is creativity?

30/09/2020

DOUBT is the No. 1 Killer of Dreams. ⁣

Many of my clients used to think that the road to success is a straight line.⁣

Some designers are lucky and get famous overnight. That’s true for very few of them but for most of us, designers like you and me, success lies in working towards our goals having a sound strategy in place. This is the most effective way to achieve the results you seek. ⁣

Now it’s time to electrify your magic!

꧁ How I discovered I was procrastinating…꧂⁣

I always thought procrastination was not part of my habits. ⁣

I had a to-do list and was managing to do a few things on it everyday.⁣

But….⁣

One day, I realised that I was always avoiding some things on my to-do list, things that should have been top priority, things that took a long time, or continued effort.⁣

I was giving myself excuses. ⁣

Oh! but I had so many emails to reply and then I have done this & that so my day was pretty busy! I could not have done more today...⁣

That too, my friend, is procrastination. Yup.⁣

So now that I am aware of this, I work on trying not to postpone the same big task on my to-do list, dragging it from one day to another. ⁣

I will do it as soon as possible!⁣

Not always... possible but at least I try!⁣

Can you relate to this?⁣
