Few holiday visitors on a walking holiday in Crete will be able to resist tackling the Samaria Gorge- one of the longest gorges in Europe with a particularly fine hiking trail. The 16 kilometre path snakes down from the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of central Crete to the shingle shore on the south coast near Agia Roumelli. The Samaria Gorge of Crete is now a national park and it is not the wild and rugged gorge it once was, much tamed today with picnic tables and level pathways, but this is still one of the most dramatic walks to be found in the whole of Greece, if not Europe.

Turtle watching is a favourite holiday treat for thousands of Greek Island tourists who buy tickets for sea trips to turtle nesting beaches. Unfortunately the holiday trippers are playing an unwitting part in killing off some of the world's rarest turtles. Conservation experts have for many years issued strong warnings against commercial exploitation of the creatures.

Argassi beach is the nearest decent beach to Zakynthos Town and that does something to explain its popularity with UK tour operators. Argassi lies about four kilometres south of the Zante island capital and has risen in popularity as a family holiday resort. The beach may be a bit boring, but the town is a quaint compact typically Greek affair which has much to recommend it.

Argostoli is the main town, cultural centre and island capital of Kefalonia with some 14,000 people living there. It's on the east coast with a deep natural harbour and surrounded by pine carpeted hills. Although the setting of Argostoli is spectacular, the town itself is endless swathes of cement and uninspiring architecture.

Well, the great British weather has done it again. Not many people will be lucky enough to have a wardrobe fit to cope with the range of weather we have seen in the last few weeks and we will no doubt be seeing in the coming months too. One day you may need a thick wool Peacoat to keep out the plummeting temperatures, the next it might be a technical sailing type jacket to keep you dry no matter what.
