A long-running study from the University of Helsinki found that women who regularly engage in traditional "grandma hobbies" such as knitting, sewing, crochet and gardening tend to live up to 8 years longer on average.
These activities help calm the nervous system by lowering stress and promoting a meditative, focused state through repetitive movement.
They also build confidence by creating a sense of purpose, routine and visible accomplishment.
Mentally, such hobbies keep the brain active, supporting memory, attention and cognitive flexibility as women age.
Together, these effects show that simple, creative pastimes can be deeply therapeutic, emotionally grounding and beneficial for long-term health.

We've been busy at Knit&Natter making handmade items for Ukraine - hats, scarves, blankets, cardigans.

Thank you to all our ladies for all the knitting that was done ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘.

The items were collected a couple of weeks ago and we've received this beautiful 'thank you' card. It's so good to receive such a lovely "thank you' and know that our contribution is appreciated. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The knitting (and nattering) continues!

...plus a lot of others, I'm sure! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿงถ

Our little group is not just about knitting or crochet. We welcome cross-stitchers, embroiderers, sewers, paper crafters - if you can carry your craft, come and join us.

We're a friendly group and offer a warm welcome to anyone wanting to spend some time enjoying their hobby and meeting new people.

There's plenty of friendly chat plus a cuppa and biscuits, all in our Warm Space. We have needles, hooks, yarn, patterns - almost everything to start you off and there's always someone to help or support you if you're new to a craft.

Everybody welcome.

Our Knit&Natter story so far...

The group started about 8 or 9 years ago. The Library invited members to knit little hats for Innocents Smoothies and Age UK's fundraising campaign and the idea of a weekly group grew from that. Just 5 people came to the first meeting. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Over the years we grew to around 30 regular members - not everyone came every week but we regularly had 20-24 people. Then the pandemic hit. โ˜น๏ธ

Post-pandemic, there was a drop in numbers but the group now has around 20 members๐Ÿ‘. Any type of craft is welcome - knitting, crochet, cross stitch, embroidery, macrame, loom knitting. If you can carry it, bring it along. Experienced crafters and newbies are all welcomed and there's a lot of support, tuition or tips and wrinkles for those who want it.

The group work or their own projects but over the years we have supported many local charities and services - DRI, nursing homes, Dementia Care, NHS baby care units, national aid appeals and, of course, supporting fundraising for Cantley Community Library with our regular craft stall at Library events.

The social side of our group is a real bonus. Connections have been made and friendships established. There's always plenty of chat and a lot of laughter - it's a lovely place to meet like-minded people and to relax and enjoy a hobby.

Come along and join us!
