When is a shell not a shell? When it’s a heart 🩶

Two of the best things combined, hearts and shells! I’ve used the texture of some fav shells to pattern these hearts. The smallest is from a Pittenweem scallop, the largest, a Skye Chequered carpet shell and the middle one is a new shell - it’s a Spanish cockle from Sitges. My first international shell!

I’ve just made pendants for now but earrings would work so well, certainly for the smaller hearts, and I have a few other textures to experiment with.

The pewter looks fab on the silver chains but a longer leather cord is perfect for these too (that’s how I’ll be wearing mine 😁)

I say all beaches are my favourites and all shells are too…..but Gairloch is a particularly amazing beach and tellins have always been my favourite shell. Fun fact - I have a wee pink tellin tattoo and although I know what it is, most people think it’s a butterfly 🙄. Anyway, I’m back in Gairloch, parked up in the dunes, and have had a couple of lovely beach walks and found lots of fab shells. There is a dinky wee striped Venus that will be the next one I make from…..also maybe a mussel, also maybe a limpet….. 😁🫣

As far as shell jewellery goes, this one is not the shelliest looking set but I think they are so pretty, and yes, maybe a bit like butterflies!

What do you think?? 🤔

I had notions for a Silver Darling ring and landed on this crossover style….hmmmm, now not so sure??

I felt the two heads naturally met in the middle but now I think they should have been swimming the same direction so you’d see a bit of head and tail?

Adjustable rings are a bit marmite. They are great at face to face events because they fit most people, but sometimes at just not that practical?

I’m not convinced, but will wear it for a bit and see how I get on.

Let me know your thoughts please on head/tail orientation and the adjustable v fixed size 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

P.S. There’s nothing stopping me from making both kinds too 🫣

A delivery has landed in of all the shells and fish you could ever need! Here’s a wee flavour but there are even more just waiting to be snapped up (that’s my sales chat ☺️). Of course, the shop is full of other amazing homewares, gifts and treasures so be sure to pop in to see Michelle (and Ralphie 🐾) if you are in Pittenweem - just a 20second walk from The Hub in the square, en route to the harbour 🩵

The second thing I ever made from silver was a pair of heart earrings, similar to these ones. The originals are no longer earrings, one is part of my first creativity bracelet (I wear it every day) and the other is now a friend’s pendant! Since then I’ve made many, many more hearts, some earrings, some pendants and some bangles and bracelets. I love making them and love the simplicity of the shape and what it means 🖤🤍🖤

En route to haym__carnoustie 🤍A selection of beach treasures, shells as well as the pewter ‘Silver darlings’ I shared the other day.

Janice needed a few more colourful pieces and I think I have managed that! Including a fab golden yellow sunburst/lemon slice piece of pattered glass 🩷🩵💛💙

A delivery straight from the beach (via my workbench!) x

Introducing the silver, ’Silver Darlings’ collection!

The tinier cousin to the pewter version I’ve shared already (swipe for comparison pic). Now, this idea started 8 months ago when I used some random off-cut fish shapes to make a pair of earrings for myself…just for fun…. which is typical me at the busiest time of year! .

Fast forward to this collection with a more refined drop earring design, studs and pendant, not to mention a whole lot more time and care spent on the process! Each fish is completely unique, all have their own markings and scales so they catch the light.

I’ve been wearing them for a wee while now and they pass the wearability test with flying (or swimming?!) colours. Super light but still got movement and impact.

These are very different to anything I’ve made before. Very small, delicate but I’m so happy with how they have come out.

For more on the inspiration, see my previous post….and I might do a wee blog given the research I’ve been diving into for the last month or so! 📚

Hope you love these as much as I do 🤍🐟🤍

I’ve been working on these wee pewter guys for a while now, as well as a silver version (watch this space).

They are based on herring, a fish which which is such a significant part of my own culture coming from Pittenweem. These ‘silver darlings’ are my fun and shiny representation of the fish and have been a joy to create. More of a 2d shape, each one will be a bit different and the scales will catch the light so they live up to their name!

The story card (a Pittenweem version and a general version) is a bit of the history, particularly highlighting the fisher lasses who were vital to the processing of the tonnes of fish landed daily. Now an iconic symbol of the East Neuk (see the stunning work of J McGhie), they were a part of all coastal life as they travelled the length and breadth of the country from Peterhead to Yarmouth and beyond, working their fingers to the bone (quite literally) while their loved ones were at sea. Amazing, strong, resilient women.

Just a wee shiny fish, but a symbol of part of our history and culture. These will be landing haym__carnoustie and Rachel & Euan - havens treasures some@point this week x

If you don’t know this song, you can’t be from Pittenweem 🎵 😁

A lovely and meaningful commission using an unworn bangle to make three new jangly bangles (the sound was important and I get that!). Also added a sentimental, again unworn, pair of Connemara marble earrings to two of the bangles. Now these old stones were not for leaving their old setting and were well glued in (😮) but have been freshly housed in new shiny settings and definitely no glue required 😇!!

I didn’t take any proper pics of before/during /after except these few snaps with dirty and plastered fingers…. but you get the idea! Lovely wee marbles too and I do love local stones 💚! I also love making unworn jewellery wearable again and these will be. I don’t do this too often, it depends on the project and what can be done in my mini workshop but if you have similar unworn items, let me know and I can maybe help x
