I’ve heard this/felt this myself from lots of clients.
Vinted is a good resource if you want to try to reclaim at least something. But if you’re not wearing it - get it out of your wardrobe!
I want to share something that might really help you let go of clothes as you sort your wardrobe: the sunk cost fallacy.
You might have heard of it before – just not in relation to your clothes. Stick with me… it does make sense.
A sunk cost is something you’ve already paid for and can’t get back. Because of that, it shouldn’t influence future decisions.
Now let’s apply that to your wardrobe.
Imagine you bought a new pair of M&S trousers a few weeks ago. The return window has passed. You’ve worn them a couple of times… and realised you don’t actually like them. The fabric’s scratchy, they don’t hang right, and you don’t feel good in them.
Once clothing is bought (with a few rare exceptions), its value drops to pretty much zero. You’re unlikely to get your money back.
But what do we often do?
We keep them.
Because we paid good money.
We guilt ourselves into wearing them.
And then feel rubbish all day.
I get it. I’ve done it too.
But here’s the truth: the money is already gone. Keeping those trousers won’t bring it back. What they will do is clutter your wardrobe, your headspace, and quietly make you feel bad every time you see them.
So… they need to go.
Give them to a friend. Donate them. Get them out of your wardrobe.
They’re not right for you – and that’s reason enough.
Don’t keep clothes because of what you paid for them. Keep (and make space for) the clothes that feel good, fit well, and bring a little joy every time you open the wardrobe door.
✨ Clear the guilt. Clear the clutter. Make space for what is right. ✨
