World Cup nations, woven in tartan. Next up: South Korea

Tartan isn’t just for clans. It can tell stories of countries, families, friendships and cultural connection too.

The South Korea Tartan was designed in 2010 by David McGill for an international fashion show, and to celebrate the marriage of his daughter to a native South Korean.

Its colours bring together the national flag of South Korea, the Taegukgi, with the blue and white of Scotland’s Saltire, creating a tartan rooted in both personal story and international friendship.

It has since been used at events in Scotland and South Korea, a bold symbol of connection across borders.

World Cup nations, woven in tartan. Next up: South Africa. 🇿🇦

Tartan isn’t just for clans. It can tell the story of countries, communities and shared heritage too.

The South Africa Tartan was created in 2006 to celebrate the friendship between Scotland and South Africa, designed in collaboration with South Africans living in Scotland and approved by the High Commissioner to the UK.

Its bold colours bring together both national flags in one vibrant cloth, a symbol of connection, pride and cultural exchange.

In 2023, Buckingham Palace ordered a full kilt length of this tartan, which was later presented by King Charles to President Ramaphosa.

Ever wondered how much difference a pleat can make?

We gave our kiltmaker Craig Kiltmaker one freshly designed tartan (Malik Family Tartan) and asked her to explore the pleating options.

The result? Six completely different looks from the very same cloth. It’s amazing how the choice of pleat can bring out different colours, lines and details. You almost wouldn’t know it was the same tartan.

Swipe to see them all. Which would you choose?

With the World Cup on the horizon, we’re kicking off a new series of posts celebrating national tartans linked to competing nations, and where better to start than Mexico, one of the host countries for 2026.

Meet Mexicana..

Bold, bright and full of life, this is one of our most vibrant national tartans, which feels rather fitting. Designed in 2014 in collaboration with members of the Saint Andrew’s Society of Mexico, Mexicana was created for the people of Mexico, those of Mexican descent, and anyone around the world who feels a connection to the country.

Its colours are drawn from the Mexican national flag, woven into a tartan that celebrates identity, heritage and connection across borders.

Because tartan isn’t only about clans. It can be about countries, communities, shared stories and the places that stay with us.

Tartan has always told stories of place, people and identity. Our European collection carries that tradition forward, celebrating Scotland’s deep ties with Europe and the many communities who carry European heritage with pride.

For ancestry, for connection, for belonging.

Thinking of buying your first kilt? Here’s what you need to know 👇

A good kilt isn’t just something you wear once for a wedding and forget about. It’s a proper investment piece, made to fit, made to move, and made to last.

At International Tartans, we offer two main options:

Fully handmade kilts
Stitched entirely by hand, these are the heirloom option. They offer the best fit, comfort and long-term wear, and can be easier to alter in future. With proper care, they’re made to last for generations.

Hand-finished kilts
Mostly machine-stitched, then carefully finished by hand. Still beautifully made, still 100% wool, and a more affordable option for your first kilt.

You can also choose from our women’s kilted skirts and mini kilts, made in mediumweight tartan cloth with traditional pleating and plenty of swing.

Not sure which tartan, style or finish is right for you? Send us a message and we’ll help you work it out.

Tartan is for everyone. Your first kilt should feel like yours.

Looking for something a bit different this spring?

Our Sakura Tartan was inspired by Japan’s cherry blossom season, a time that marks renewal and the return of light after winter.

The colours reflect the season - pink and white from the cherry blossom combine with spring green. It’s a tartan that catches the eye, but it also carries a story of connection, between Scotland and Japan, and between past and present.

You don’t need a family connection. If you love the colours, if the story speaks to you, that’s enough.

Everything is handmade in our South of Scotland workshop using 100% wool, woven locally.

🌸 Available by the metre or made to order - scarves, shawls and more
