A few stills from my trip to Harrogate Turkish Baths

Lovely chilled vibe here and the hot stone seating was perfect for warming my lower back, as I’ve been doing a lot more swimming over the summer and it’s a bit tender

Should give a shout out to the manager of The Ivy who waived my bill just because it was my “first time there”, what a gent!

The first stop on my Aufguss tour of Scotland is Hot Tottie Saunas . I’ve two sessions scheduled, so if being treated to a multi sensory tour of the world without leaving the sauna, sounds like your jam, get on board !

What can I expect , I’ve never experienced Aufguss before I hear you ask…well, close your eyes and imagine you’re swinging gently in a hammock on Negril beach, Jamaica, you can hear Bob Marley’s “Sun is Shining” on the stereo as the scent of allspice and limes drift down to you from the beach bar, rum punch anyone?!

I’ll be taking you to 8 different destinations, using music, essential oils, scented scrubs and some tasty treats too.

Harrogate Turkish Baths has been number one on my Hot List for time, so absolutely delighted to have visited this weekend !

The Royal Baths were officially opened in 1897, at the time it was the most advanced centre for hydrotherapy in the world. It might have been the best but was far from the only one….in Victorian England public baths were common in all towns and you could “treat” yourself to some weird and wonderful treatments such as a Plombiere Do**he and sulphur and peat baths - I reckon you’d need a good wash after if not before haha

With the advent of bathrooms in private housing (a surprisingly recent addition, my dad never tires of telling me he was washed in the kitchen sink as a child) public houses such as Harrogate fell out of favour, closing for its doors to the public in 1969.

Thankfully by 2002 lottery money was invested and the baths are now restored to their former glory. The baths are essentially as you would have seen 120+ years ago , with little alteration. The moorish architecture and decorative pieces remain as does the Italian mosaic floor. Thanks to the nature of the materials used such as the brightly coloured bricks, tiles and paintwork , the baths look fresh, bright and inviting

I paid £39 for my 90 minute stay and want to thank Catherine, Dave and the team for making it such a memorable and pleasurable visit
