Should I go to an independent optician or Specsavers?

It's one of the questions we get asked more than almost any other. And we think it deserves a straight answer rather than the kind of response you might expect from an independent practice with an obvious interest in the outcome.

Honestly? Neither is universally better. Specsavers serves millions of people every year and does many things very well. They have made eye care accessible and affordable and that genuinely matters. For a lot of people they are exactly the right choice.

Independent practices do things differently. Longer appointments, more personal care, hand picked eyewear you won't find on the high street, and a relationship with someone who actually knows your eyes over time. For some people that difference matters a great deal.

The right choice depends on your priorities. What you want from your eye care. What your prescription needs. What you value.

Over the next few days we're going to go through the real differences honestly, area by area. Not to tell you independents are always better, because they aren't for everyone. Just to give you the information to make the right choice for you.

We think you deserve a straight answer. So that's what we'll give you.

The question we get asked more than almost any other.

"Can you do two for one like Specsavers?"

Honest answer: no, we don't. But we do think what we offer is actually better, and here's why.

Two for one deals are appealing on paper. What often happens in practice is that the second pair gets chosen quickly, doesn't get the same care as the first, and ends up living in a drawer. It seemed like a great deal at the time. It just never gets worn.

At Bottomley's, if you'd like a second pair we'll do the lenses at half price. That's a genuine saving on a second pair that we help you choose properly. A pair with a purpose. Something for driving, or screens, or a completely different look for evenings. Not a spare pair chosen in a hurry that you forget about.

Both pairs get the same attention. Both get properly fitted. Both are chosen because they work for you.

A second pair you actually wear is worth infinitely more than a free pair that doesn't.

An open letter to anyone who has never been to a boutique optician.

We know you exist. You have a place you go. It does the job. You get your eyes checked, you pick something from the wall, you leave. It's fine and we completely understand why it's the default for most people.

But we'd gently ask you to consider something.

Have you ever left an eye appointment feeling genuinely looked after? Not just processed, but actually cared for? Has anyone ever taken the time to explain what they found and what it means for you going forward? Has anyone ever sat with you, learned about your life, and found you a pair of glasses that felt like they were chosen specifically for you?

If the answer is no, it might just be because you haven't been to the right place yet. Not because that experience doesn't exist.

We're not for everyone. We're a small independent practice with two boutiques in Halifax and Huddersfield and we take our time with people. We're not the quickest option and we're not trying to be.

But if you've ever wondered whether there's a better way to look after your eyes and find glasses you genuinely love, we'd be glad to show you what that looks like.

Come in for a coffee. No obligation. Just come and see.

If you drive and you've never tried polarised lenses, this might be the most useful thing you read today.
Standard sunglass lenses reduce brightness. That's it. They make everything darker.
Polarised lenses do something quite different. They filter out the specific type of light that causes glare, the horizontal light waves that bounce off wet roads, car bonnets, water and glass. The result isn't just darker vision. It's clearer, more comfortable vision with dramatically less of that squinting, eye straining glare that makes driving in bright or wet conditions so tiring.

A lot of people put up with driving glare for years and assume it's just part of the experience. It isn't.
The difference when you first put on a pair of properly polarised lenses while driving is genuinely surprising.

They're available as prescription lenses too, so if you wear glasses there's no reason to miss out.
Come in and ask us about polarised options. We'll show you exactly what we mean.
See what we can do for YOU.

You may have found one of our leaflets on your doormat recently.

15,000 of them have gone out across Halifax and Huddersfield over the last few weeks and we hope they gave you a sense of what we're about.

In case you missed it, here's the short version.

We're a private boutique optician with two practices in Halifax and Huddersfield. We've been here since 1948. Every appointment is one to one, unhurried and personal. We carry frames from some of the finest independent designers in the world, chosen by us in person rather than from a catalogue. And our eye examinations are thorough, properly explained and include advanced 3D OCT imaging at our Halifax practice, the same technology used in hospital eye clinics.

We know we're only relevant to you at the point where you might need an optician, new glasses or sunglasses. We just wanted to let you know we're here when you do. We don't really do walk ins for appointments unless we happen to be free, but drop in and say hello anytime. A quick call or a booking online is all it takes to get started.

Oh, and we've got the best coffee too. ☕

Something we've found over the years is that honesty always wins in the end. Even when it's the harder choice in the moment.

Every now and then someone comes in and after a proper conversation it becomes clear that what they're looking for isn't something we have right now, or isn't right for them at this point. And so we tell them that. We could probably make a sale. But it wouldn't feel right and we don't think it would serve them well.

What we've noticed is that people remember those moments. Not always consciously, but they come back. And they send people to us. Because somewhere along the way they worked out that when we say something is right, we mean it. And when we say it isn't, we mean that too.

We're not claiming any great virtue in this. It's just what we've found works. A straight answer, even an inconvenient one, seems to matter more to people than we sometimes expect.

If that sounds like the kind of place you'd like to get your eyes looked after, we'd be glad to see you.

The most common lie people tell their optician is that their eyes feel fine.

We hear it regularly. Someone comes in after a long gap between appointments and when we ask how their vision has been they say fine, no problems, all good. And then we examine them and find something that's been quietly changing for a long time.

The thing about vision is that it changes gradually. Your brain is extraordinarily good at adapting and compensating. Slow changes in your prescription, early signs of conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration, subtle shifts in how your eyes work together — all of these can develop over months and years without you being consciously aware that anything is wrong. You adapt. You cope. You assume fine means fine.

It doesn't always.

We're not saying this to alarm anyone. Most of the time fine really is fine and that's genuinely good news. But the only way to know for certain is to have a proper examination by someone who knows what they're looking for.

If your eyes feel fine but you haven't had a thorough eye examination recently, please come in. Not because something is definitely wrong. Just because fine is worth confirming.

Bottomley Opticians was started by my grandad in 1948.

I'm not sure he'd recognise the practice today. The frames we stock, the equipment we use, the way we approach things. A lot has changed. But I like to think the basic idea is the same.

I came to running it the long way round. I worked here when I was younger, then spent years working for some of the big chains, Dolland and Aitchison, Specsavers, and for a while I left optics altogether and worked in IT sales. Different world entirely. It's crept up on me but I've been doing this for the last 20 years here at Bottomley's this time round.

Coming back gave me something I'm genuinely grateful for. I'd seen how the bigger organisations work from the inside. I understood the pressures and the compromises. But if I'm honest, I wasn't trying to do something different when I came back. I was trying to get back to what my dad and my grandad had taught me and just give it some personality.

Their basic ideas were better than anything I saw in the chains. It just feels better being able to look after people properly. It makes it fun too, deciding how we deliver that. And we can change it up when we need to. Nobody is telling us we can't.

We've been here since 1948. We're still here. And that's entirely down to the people in Halifax and Huddersfield who've trusted us with their eyes over the years. We don't take that lightly.
